2021 Fifth Round Draft Pick Has Been a Bright Spot in the 2026 Mets Rotation
The Mets' starting pitching has been horrible this season, but there has been one bright spot in the rotation: Christian Scott. The former 2021 fifth-round draft pick has taken full advantage of his opportunity and has arguably been one of the Mets' most consistent starters this season. The comeback kid has definitely earned a spot in the starting rotation for the rest of this season and heading into next year. The Mets' starting rotation has far more questions than answers both this year and next, but Scott's emergence has provided some much-needed optimism. If he continues to develop, he has the potential to become a frontline starter at the top of the rotation.
The Mets' most valuable arm made his major league debut in 2024, making nine starts. Over 47.1 innings, he posted a 0–3 record with a 4.56 ERA. His rookie season was cut short in July after he suffered a sprained UCL in his right elbow. The discomfort surfaced following a start against the Miami Marlins, and after reporting the injury, he was placed on the injured list on July 23, 2024. The injury ultimately required hybrid Tommy John surgery with an internal brace procedure that September, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2024 season and all of 2025. He read motivational books and traveled, keeping a fresh perspective in the wake of the September 2024 injury that derailed a promising first step into his major league career with the Mets.
New York’s tall timber entered this season in the Opening Day starting rotation, and with injuries and veterans struggling, he has made the most of his opportunity and earned a permanent spot in the rotation. The right-hander was officially recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier this season to make his first MLB start of the year on April 23 against the Minnesota Twins. The South Florida Product has already surpassed the nine starts he made during his rookie season in 2024, making 10 starts this season. Over 45 innings, he owns a 3.20 ERA with 53 strikeouts, surpassing his 2024 strikeout total while posting a lower ERA. However, Scott's season hit a brief setback when he suffered a right hip impingement after his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 11, 2026. The injury landed him on the injured list, but he returned to the mound yesterday against the Phillies at Citi Field.
Since his rookie campaign in 2024, the Mets’ strikeout on demand has taken significant strides in his development, emerging as a more polished and dependable starting pitcher. Despite overcoming Tommy John surgery and another injury setback this season, he has returned with improved command, increased strikeout production, and the confidence to compete against major league hitters. His consistency has made him one of the Mets' most reliable starters, and at just 27 years old, he has established himself as an important piece of the club's future. With several questions still surrounding the Mets' rotation beyond this season, Scott's continued growth gives the organization a young, controllable pitcher who has the potential to anchor the staff for years to come.
