25-26 Brighton Fight to Stay in Contention for European Qualification Against Newcastle United

Brighton & Hove Albion are flying high in the Premier League with an unbeaten run of five matches. Their most recent victory was at home against Chelsea, where they won 3-0, which led to the sacking of Chelsea’s coach, Liam Rosenior. The Seagulls currently sit in sixth place, which gives them qualification into UEFA’s Europa League competition. Their opponents, on the other hand, have been suffering in all competitions. Newcastle United have lost all of their previous five matches: four matches in the Premier League and one match in the UEFA Champions League. Will Brighton be able to beat Newcastle to keep their European qualification spot? Can Newcastle United climb through the ranks of the Premier League to participate in the Champions League next season? Brighton will face off against Newcastle United on Saturday, May 2nd at 10:00 a.m. EDT.

Brighton Breakdown

With only four more matches left in the Premier League season, Brighton’s manager Fabian Hürzeler is treating each game like it is a final. The German manager is staying tight-lipped on his hopes to enter European competitions, as the last four matches will determine if they will return to an international tournament. His tactics of staying focused, staying humble, and togetherness have certainly reinvigorated the team after a terrible streak of one win in 13 matches. Hürzeler was able to turn their season around with adaptable tactics. The Seagulls are going into their next Premier League match with high morale in the team as they beat Chelsea, a club that routinely buys their players, managers, and backroom staff, 3-0. As a result, Hürzeler gave the players an unprecedented five days off to show how he rewards the players for their efforts and trusts that they will do their own physical conditioning and training at home.

The South Coast team’s players may be influenced by road fatigue as they have to make the long trip up to Newcastle. From Brighton, the trip could take four hours and 11 minutes by train, 10-12 hours by bus, or one hour and 11 minutes by plane, not including travel time to get to the airport. A key player for this match will be Jack Hinshelwood. He scored in the game against Chelsea and has been a central figure in the midfield. Hinshelwood is critical in counterattacks as he passes the ball out wide to the wingers. His vision in seeing passing lanes to quickly move the ball forward allows Brighton players to bypass many of the opposition players in the midfield. However, the 21-year-old will have some internal competition for his starting position as Yasin Ayari has recovered from his shoulder dislocation in late January. Both midfielders have scored goals this season, with a combined total of six goals and six assists in all competitions.

Newcastle United Breakdown

Joelinton will be back in the squad after serving his two-match suspension. Anthony Gordon is expected to be fully recovered from his hip injury and available for the matchup against Brighton. Valentino Livramento will miss this match as his participation in games has been inconsistent this season, currently due to a thigh injury. Fabian Schär will also miss with an ankle injury and foot infection; however, he will most likely return to the squad for the West Ham match at home. Newcastle is currently at the bottom of the table, sitting 14th with only 42 points. With their current record of no wins in the past five matches in all competitions, they have to be worried about the possibility of relegation. Especially with how few points separate each team’s position this Premier League season. Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, will be relieved to have some of his important players back, like Gordon, who poses a threat in the attacking midfield role.

Match Expectations

Hürzeler’s side emphasizes building out from the back. They also adapt their tactics to their specific opponents. For example, in the victory over Chelsea, Hürzeler directed the centerbacks, Jan Paul van Hecke and Olivier Boscagli, to flank the goalie in a wider position. This led to the defenders being more open to back passes. This also pulled the opposition players further towards the goalie and defenders, creating more space in the center of the field. This allows the Seagulls to have a numerical advantage in the attacking parts of the pitch. Hürzeler could line his team up like this against Newcastle; however, the Magpies’ emphasis on defense may make this difficult for them. Howe tends to use a back four and keep his team focused on high-intensity pressing. This tactic can pay off for Newcastle in the beginning; however, it is a strenuous strategy to maintain throughout the full 90 minutes of relegation time. Newcastle was one of the reasons the FA placed more rules on time wasting and the amount of time used for throw-ins and corner kicks, as Newcastle matches only reported the ball being in play for 40% of the time. The return for Gordon will be a huge boost for Newcastle’s tactic of using wingers to create chances within the penalty box.

Match Predictions

This match will have a lot of energy during the first half hour, but for Howe’s side, their energy might drop off due to their manager’s demanding and high-pressure tactics. Hürzeler’s side may be more fit since he trains them with great intensity on the training ground. During this Premier League campaign, both sides have been inconsistent with their performances in the two halves. Taking into account the Magpies’ dismal performance in their past five matches and their ranking in the Premier League table, this match will be a difficult one for them. Outside of the possible road fatigue the Brighton squad may face, they have high spirits from their form of being unbeaten in five matches. Due to Brighton’s better performance in the last few weeks, the match swings in their favor with a 3-1 away victory for the Seagulls.
