25-26 Lakers Get Past the Nets After Late Fourth Quarter Surge

NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers secured a win at Crypto.com Arena on Friday night, beating the Brooklyn Nets 116–99. This victory brings their season record to 48–26, strengthening their standing in the Western Conference. Luka Dončić was the key driver of the offense, scoring 41 points on 15-of-25 shooting. However, the story wasn't just his scoring; it was Dončić's 16th technical foul of the season, which resulted in an automatic one-game suspension. As a result, the Lakers will likely have to play their next game without their main playmaker. His control of the game's tempo was exceptional, but the technical foul added extra tension to the Lakers' playoff seeding race. The Nets continue to come up short, having failed to meet expectations since the beginning of the 2025-36 NBA season.

Lebron James: The Master Orchestrator

With Luka leading in scoring, LeBron James took on a key role. He contributed 14 points, six rebounds, and eight assists over 37 minutes. Instead of taking shots himself, LeBron prioritized defensive rotations and transition passes, letting the game unfold naturally. His 19-plus-minus, tied for the second-highest on the team, highlights his influence on the game’s rhythm without needing to fill the box score. Austin Reaves continues to be an ideal complement to the Lakers' stars, scoring 26 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and hitting 4 of 7 three-pointers. When Brooklyn doubled Luka or collapsed on LeBron’s drives, Reaves was often in position to capitalize. His composure and secondary playmaking were crucial as the Nets attempted to rally.

Brooklyn’s Fourth Quarter Collapse

The Nets demonstrated strong effort through three quarters, trailing by just one point before the final period. However, their offense completely faltered in the fourth quarter, as they were outscored 31–15. Nic Claxton was a key contributor with 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting, but the Nets lacked clutch shooting ability in the closing moments as the Lakers' defense intensified. This game reflected the Nets' overall season. For 36 minutes, they played with energy and executed well, leading multiple times in the second and third quarters. Yet, the last 12 minutes revealed the significant difference in the closing experience. By the six-minute mark, the Lakers' defensive rotations were sharp, while the young Nets players struggled with spacing and shot selection.
