25-26 Rockets Win on the Road Stunning the Lakers in Game Five
The Houston Rockets kept their playoff hopes alive with a determined 99-93 victory on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, forcing a Game Six. After almost being swept, losing the first three games of the series, the Rockets have now won two straight to narrow the series gap. Before this game, LeBron James had won 16 consecutive home games when his team had a chance to close out a playoff series. The Rockets ended that impressive streak by disrupting the Lakers’ offense and staying composed in a tough environment. Although James scored a team-high 25 points with seven assists, the Lakers’ supporting players struggled to find their rhythm late in the game.
The Second Quarter Turnaround
The Lakers seemed ready to take control early, leading 28-21 at the end of the first quarter. However, Houston dominated the second quarter 30-19, turning a seven-point deficit into a four-point halftime lead. This turnaround was driven by bench players and a boost from Amen Thompson with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Reed Sheppard was huge in this win with 12 points. He added the playmaking depth the Lakers lacked. Jabari Smith Jr. stood out for Houston, scoring 22 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and making multiple three-pointers. His defensive versatility was also evident; Smith Jr. led a defense that restricted the Lakers to only 93 points. His consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter sparked a 14-6 run that shifted the momentum permanently.
Balanced Scoring vs. Lakers Free Throw Reliance
The Rockets had all five starters scoring in double digits, demonstrating a balanced offensive effort led by Alperen Şengün with 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, and Tari Eason with 18 points. Meanwhile, the Lakers depended heavily on free throws to stay competitive. Then Austin Reaves scored 22 points, 12 of them from 13 free throws. When officiating tightened in the fourth quarter, the Lakers' half-court offense faltered. Houston has now become only the 16th team in NBA history to force a Game Six after being down 3-0 in a series. The Lakers’ goal is straightforward: they must discover ways to produce simple baskets that don't depend on LeBron playing 40-plus minutes of hero ball. Although a comeback is still challenging, the momentum has shifted back to Los Angeles as the series moves to Houston for Game Six on Friday.
