25-Year-Old Point Guard Agrees to New Deal with the Bulls

NBA

Like any player in the NBA, Tre Jones is trying to find a team that he can call home. The former Duke Blue Devil has spent time with the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls during his six-year career so far. Now, it has been reported that Jones has re-signed with the Bulls on a three-year, $24 million deal. Jones is another asset to the point guard rotation. After suffering a foot injury that ended his season, the 2020 draft pick looks to return to form and be a contributor for Chicago this season.

Jones played his college basketball at Duke. The same college that his brother, Tyus Jones, won a national championship with in 2015. During his freshman season, Tre Jones averaged nine points, five assists, and three rebounds in 36 games played. He returned for his sophomore season, where he established himself as one of the best point guards in the country. Jones went on to win both the ACC Player of the Year award and the Defensive Player of the Year award. He averaged 16 points, four rebounds, and one steal. After the season, Jones declared for the 2020 NBA Draft. The San Antonio Spurs selected him with the 41st pick in the second round of the draft. In his first season with the Spurs, he was assigned to the G-League team, the Austin Spurs, and bounced back and forth between the San Antonio Spurs. It was not until his third year with the Spurs that Jones took off. He played in 68 games and averaged 12 points, three rebounds, and six assists for a Spurs team that made the Play-In Tournament as a 10th seed that season. Tre Jones solidified himself as the starting point guard for the Spurs for the next two seasons until he was traded to the Chicago Bulls as part of the Zach LaVine trade that also sent De’Aaron Fox to the Spurs.

During his time with the Bulls, Jones averaged 11 points, three rebounds, and four assists in 18 games for the Bulls this season before suffering a foot injury that ended his season. The Bulls season would end in the Play-In Tournament and now as they look towards the future, Jones looks to make Chicago his permanent home even with the Bulls crowded backcourt. However, with the Bulls Jones looks to be a starting point guard or a high-caliber backup point guard for the team.
