25-Year-Old Quarterback Signs One-Year Deal with the Cowboys
Sam Howell has been bounced around from team to team in the three years of his NFL career. Over the course of this past season, Howell played for three different teams. He started his season with the Minnesota Vikings and was traded to the Seattle Seahawks. Before the end of the season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he served as a backup to their starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts. As of today, this 25-year-old quarterback has signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Howell and the Cowboys agreed on a one-year contract.
Howell was drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders after three productive seasons as the starting quarterback for the North Carolina Tar Heels football. Despite being projected as a possible early-round pick earlier in his college career, Howell slid down the board during the draft process. He finished his college career with over 10,000 passing yards and 92 passing touchdowns, making him one of the most productive quarterbacks in school history. Since then, the 25-year-old quarterback has slid into the backup quarterback role for each team he has played for.
During this past NFL season, Howell served as the Eagles’ third quarterback. Howell saw very limited game action during this past season. The smallest type of action that he has seen in a while. In the 2025 season, he appeared in one game for Philadelphia but did not record any completed passes or passing yards. The 25-year-old quarterback finished the year as a reserve on the sideline, providing depth at the position. Howell’s role with the Eagles was primarily to provide insurance behind Hurts and Tanner McKee rather than contribute significant on-field statistics.
With Howell coming to terms on a deal with the Cowboys, he has the chance to make or break the type of player that he can be. The 25-year-old quarterback was once a college star, and there is the possibility that he can do it again. He can step in and be the player he once was. The contract that the Cowboys gave him was well-deserved and earned.
