39-Year-Old Former Steelers WR is Still Viewed as an Underrated Franchise Great in 2026
Throughout their history, the Steelers have had many legendary players. However, they’ve also had other important players whose contributions are often overlooked. Former Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace is one of these underrated players. Two-time Super Bowl Champion Bryant McFadden appeared on the With the First Pick podcast on May 6th. During the episode, McFadden named Wallace as one player who doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
“Mike Wallace was different,” remarked McFadden. “We had some dogs. Bruce Arians used to talk so much trash and used to be like, ‘Well, guys, how y’all want to die today? You want to die fast or slow?’ Meaning, if you press, we’re going up top. If you play off, we’re gonna work our way down the football field against you.” He added, “Mike Wallace is an unheralded Steeler great, in my opinion, because he was phenomenal for us.”
The Ole Miss alumnus was the second-fastest player at the 2009 NFL Combine, completing the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds. He was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Wallace played for the Steelers for four seasons, making significant contributions to the team from 2009 until 2012. His incredible speed made him a great fit with Ben Roethlisberger. His versatility also made him a key player.
During his rookie season, Wallace recorded 39 receptions, 756 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. The 2011 Pro Bowl receiver became one of the NFL’s elite wideouts during the 2010 season, registering 60 receptions, 1,257 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. He had seven 100-yard+ receiving games. Wallace was the Steelers’ number one receiver during their journey to Super Bowl XLV. Even though the Green Bay Packers defeated the Steelers in the Super Bowl, the Ole Miss alumni’s performance was impressive. He had nine catches for 89 yards and one touchdown. Wallace had another amazing season in 2011, registering 72 receptions, 1,193 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. Wallace received a Pro Bowl selection in 2011.
Wallace played another six seasons in the NFL, even after his time with the Steelers ended. He spent time playing for the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, and Philadelphia Eagles. Throughout his NFL career, the 2011 Pro Bowl receiver amassed 538 receptions, 8,072 receiving yards, and 57 touchdowns. Even though Wallace doesn’t get the same attention as other Steelers wide receivers, his impact on the team has earned him respect among his peers. He deserves recognition for his contributions to the team.
