49ers 2024 First Round Pick May Become Their Clear WR One In 2025

NFL

The 49ers matched up against the Las Vegas Raiders in their second preseason game. Unlike last week against Denver, San Francisco decided to play their starters for a possession in the first quarter today. Quarterback Brock Purdy and receiver Ricky Pearsall immediately connected on several completions, including a 21-yard dart from Purdy to Pearsall on a third-and-long conversion. Entering Week One, Pearsall will need to step up as the team’s number-one option in the wide receiver group. This early action shows the chemistry that has been built between Purdy and his starters throughout training camp.

The goal for the 49ers starters in today’s game seemed to be testing the chemistry between Purdy and Pearsall in real game action. During training camp, the two have had a ton of time to develop trust. However, it wasn’t proven until today when the organization truly saw the duo shine, only needing one drive to display their improved connection. San Francisco should only expect bigger and better things as the pair prepares to play just their second season together.

Specifically with Pearsall, he has a ton of expectations after being selected with the 31st pick in the first round just an offseason ago. His rookie season couldn’t have started much worse due to injuries, but as the 2024 regular season went on, the 49ers allowed him to grow comfortable within the offense. As a result, he hit his stride in the final two weeks of the season, racking up 210 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Entering the offseason, San Francisco entered a transition at the receiver position. With the departure of Deebo Samuel, the question mark of Brandon Aiyuk’s long-term availability, and the uncertainty of Jauan Jennings’ contract negotiations, this will only indicate an increased impact and workload for Pearsall in 2025.

Pearsall could develop into a go-to target for Purdy early into the season, which may bring value as the season progresses. The 49ers expect Aiyuk to return around midseason. While Purdy’s life will get easier, San Francisco could possess a dangerous receiving tandem for opposing defenses if Pearsall can catch fire early. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is prepared for some trial and error on both sides of the ball over the 2025 season, recently comparing this roster to their 2017 and 2018 rosters. However, as a former 2024 first-round selection, Pearsall will look to prove the organization right with his clear opportunity to create a winning impact by developing into the 49ers' most reliable target.
