A 32-Year-Old Centre’s Crucial Contribution to the 2026 New York Rangers

NHL

With only four games remaining in the 2025-2026 NHL season, the New York Rangers’ anticipated reset is rapidly approaching. The core of this team, which included the now traded star forward Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings, and the continued speculation surrounding the presence of veteran players like center Vincent Trocheck, raises many questions about the identity of this team moving forward. Not all veterans are on the chopping block, though. Centre Mika Zibanejad has proven his skill and contribution over the course of a poorly played season.

Best Ranger of the 2025-2026 Season

Over the course of 76 games, the 32-year-old has earned 72 points, averaging for a total of 0.947 points per game. Within those statistics, the Rangers forward has scored 33 goals and made 39 assists. In a season of struggle, Zibanejad’s personal efforts carried and led the team as the Rangers’ point leader. More importantly, these accolades illustrate growth within his individual game, especially after the 2024-2025 season. In 82 games, he only scored 20 goals.

Growth From the 2024-2025 Season

Aside from the unfortunate statistics, Zibanejad lacked confidence on the ice throughout last year’s entire season, often turning over the puck in moments of distress and playing with severe hesitancy. As the fanbase continued to question his skills, his nerves became increasingly obvious. These points do not even account for the powerhouse the center has been on the penalty kill and power play. Specifically on the penalty kill, the 32-year-old engages his defensive skills to poke check and block pucks with ease. Despite his position as a centre, his defensive style and positioning are crucial to the Rangers when shorthanded.

Best Player for Team Sweden

Aside from being the Blueshirts’ best player this season, Zibanejad stepped into the Olympic Games as a vital player for Team Sweden’s Olympic glory. Despite only playing five games and coming short in an Olympic medal, he led the team with three goals. These games illustrated the 32-year-old’s versatility and ability to play alongside any player. Such skill will be an asset as the Rangers foster a new identity during the offseason. Zibanejad’s toolset has, can, and will be trusted on Rangers ice.
