A Fresh Start in Pittsburgh: Cornerback Set for First Game as a Steeler
The Steelers signed veteran cornerback Tre Flowers to their active roster on Christmas Day. Flowers spoke with the media on Friday. He recounted receiving the call to join the Steelers. He said, “It was Christmas Eve. I was trying to get ahead of my daughters getting up so they could see stuff under the tree, and that’s how it happened.” Flowers continued, “I said, ‘Pack your bags.’ I gotta spend Christmas with my kids, so I’ve got my wife and kids up here. It’s a blessing.”
Flowers was asked about joining the Steelers this late in the season. He replied, “Best situation you could be in.” He added, “Just like I said, I want to help a team win, help a team get to the Super Bowl again, and that’s my goal.” Flowers helped the Cincinnati Bengals make it to Super Bowl LVI.
Flowers provides some needed help to the Steelers secondary, as they’re dealing with injuries. Brandin Echols and James Pierre will not be playing on Sunday. Echols has a groin injury. Pierre has a calf injury. Flowers is a versatile player. He’s also a valuable contributor on special teams. According to Pro Football Focus, his missed tackle percentage over the span of his NFL career is 9.9 percent.
Flowers discussed his approach to acclimating to a new team. He said, “I always pride myself on just trying to study. So I always try to start fresh, and that’s exactly how I’ll attack it here. This defense is a little different than all the other places I’ve been, so I guess this will be a little bit more of a challenge. I’m ready for it.”
Flowers was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Aside from the Bengals and the Seahawks, he’s also played for the Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and the Detroit Lions. He adds much-needed depth to the Steelers' defense. Flowers’ experience will be an asset to the Steelers in their upcoming games. He’s expected to play on Sunday when the Steelers play the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. EST.
