A Patriots Cast-Off Can Be a Difference Maker for the Chiefs in 2026

NFL

The 2025 NFL season was a 17-game hangover from the absolute drubbing the Kansas City Chiefs took at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, a campaign Chiefs Kingdom would like to forget. Super Bowl LV, Super Bowl LIX, and now the 2025 season have been placed in a locked room that is the collective consciousness of Chiefs fans, a room hurried by quickly and without a glance. However, there is a light that shines from beneath the door, one bright spot that glows from the rubble of 2025, and if that door were to be opened, that light would be seen coming from wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. The wiry deep threat Chiefs GM Brett Veach took a flyer on has rocketed past the expectations of being a practice squad player after a dismal stint with the Patriots.

In 2025, the Kansas City receiving corps was hobbled by the six-week suspension of Rashee Rice, injuries, and just plain inconsistency. This symphony of misfortune allowed Thornton the opportunity to hit a high note that resonated with the Chiefs. While in the spotlight, Thornton made the most of it. In the three years the 2022 second-round pick out of Baylor spent with the Patriots, he totaled just 385 yards for two receiving touchdowns. In his one year as a Chief, Thornton had 438 yards receiving for three touchdowns, his most consistent production on display during the first five games of the season before being essentially sidelined for the last nine games when receivers became healthy, and Rice returned, much to the ire of Chiefs Kingdom. The burgeoning KC star also suffered a concussion in week 15 that ultimately ended his year. Still, the impression was made both on fans and on the Chiefs, who have signed Thornton to a two-year contract worth $11 million with a max value of $14 million.

So, what’s the plan for Thornton for the 2026 season? Before he was moved to a lesser role in favor of returning starting pass catchers in 2025, Thornton was on pace for at least a 900-yard season, accumulating 272 yards on 13 catches through his first five games. With Rice officially cleared by the league of malfeasance, thus avoiding suspension, and fellow deep threat Xavier Worthy looking to make a strong showing, the Chiefs will be looking to Thornton to be another problem for defenders far down the field. These receivers, along with tight end Travis Kelce, who, into his late 30s, was still a top-five player at the position in 2025, could prove absolutely lethal to defenses if expectations of Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III are fulfilled. With opposing defenses having to account for a consistent and effective run game, Kansas City’s newfound weapon in Thornton could find himself having a career year. The connection between quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Thornton was clear; the duo dialed up big plays that included a 61-yard bomb caught in the end zone by the Baylor alum in a Week 11 game versus the Denver Broncos. More of that is definitely what Kansas City has in mind for a receiver who floundered as a Patriot but is finding his way as a Chief.
