A Possible AFC West Battle in Brazil Could Be Forthcoming
The NFL will fully release the schedule for the 2025 season on May 14th. Rumors are already swirling about when possible matchups might take place. In particular, everyone knows that the Los Angeles Chargers will be playing their Week One matchup in Brazil. The Chargers will be participating in the second game ever in Sao Paulo. Due to last season's result, there are many exciting opposing teams the Chargers might be set to face in Brazil.
When the Chargers were announced as the home team for the Sao Paulo games, the rumor was the Chargers would possibly face the Houston Texans. The storyline made sense as well. The two teams met in the 2024 postseason where the Texans eliminated the Chargers. As we approach May 14th and schedule release day, the heavily rumored team to head to Brazil with the Bolts are now their AFC West foes. The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs become the favorite matchup since the announcement of the NFL being close to terms in giving YouTube the broadcast rights for the Sao Paulo game. With YouTube in the picture, the expectation is matching up the Chargers with a team that will bring in a lot of views. Over the past several years, the Chargers and Chiefs have battled in very close games. These teams have already faced each other on Thursday Night Football and multiple times on Sunday Night Football. The addition of a Friday night game in Sao Paulo could be next.
If this were to be scheduled, the Chargers could be considered unlucky. With the Chargers being the home team for the game, this will mean the Chiefs wouldn't have to visit Los Angeles this season. The Bolts would not have home-field advantage against their AFC West rival as the game will be played on a neutral site. With how popular the Chiefs are globally, this can easily become a Chiefs home game. However, if YouTube and the NFL agree that a Chargers and Chiefs game would bring in the most viewership numbers, then buckle up. Only time will tell who will meet the Chargers in Brazil. The game is scheduled to be played on September 5th.
