A Quadrilogy Fight Could Be Looming in the UFC Women’s Flyweight Division

UFC

Alexa Grasso may have just had the knockout of the year this past Saturday at UFC Seattle, where she put Maycee Barber down with a vicious left hand in the first round. Even though Grasso was quick to go for a rear-naked choke immediately after the knockdown, the result was determined as a KO, as Barber was already out before the submission attempt. The Mexican Flyweight was able to shut down Barber’s momentum coming into this fight, as the latter had a seven-fight win streak before Saturday night. With this finish being one of the scarier KO’s in recent memory of the UFC, Grasso has a potential opportunity to fight again for the title that was taken from her by the champion of the division, Valentina Shevchenko.

If this fight were to end up happening at some point, it would be the fourth time that Grasso and Shevchenko have met in the octagon together, or a “quadrilogy.” There has only been one quadrilogy in UFC history, where Deiveson Figueirido and Brandon Moreno fought four times for the Flyweight title in a span of two years. One possible reason for the fourth fight occurring between the male rivals was the Majority Draw decision that was rendered in their first fight. Similarly, Grasso and Shevchenko’s second fight ended in a split draw decision, with each having just one win over the other. Grasso was able to defeat Shevchenko in the first fight by submission in the fourth round, and the latter then earned her title back by unanimous decision in the third fight. So is a quadrilogy inevitable for the two female flyweights?

Even though Grasso now has a lot more momentum after UFC Seattle, she still sits under the first-ranked fighter position in the division, Natalia Silva. Silva is more deserving of a title shot against Shevchenko currently since they have yet to face each other, and the former already has a win over Grasso. Even though Silva is most likely to earn a title shot next, there still could be an eventual quadrilogy for Grasso and Shevchenko down the road. Both flyweights have proven their status as elite fighters in the division already, and eventually, one could gain the upper hand over the other. Fans will just have to wait and see what the UFC cooks up next.
