Acquiring the Cowboys Two-Time Pro Bowl Cornerback Could Help the Saints

NFL

Have you ever had a job where you were great at what you did but weren’t a good fit for the environment? The same applies for professional sports, for example, in the NFL, where you may have a reputation for succeeding in your position but your playing style and relationship with the team aren’t compatible. This can be applied to Cornerback Trevon Diggs of the Dallas Cowboys, whose performance during the recent season has been the subject of discussion. At 26 years old, he is in the prime shape of his playing days, but his season-ending injuries to his knee have resulted in only 13 games played between 2023 and 2025, which haven’t allowed him to put up any noteworthy numbers. In mid-2023, he was signed to a five-year $97 million extension which made him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league. This was intended as a long-term investment for the team, however, when the staff examines the returns from the contract, they may reexamine whether or not they want to retain him.

Mr. Diggs has been a member of the Dallas Cowboys for the past five seasons. Although he has alternated between the left and right cornerbacks, he has remained overall in that position. Between 2020 and 2025, he has played 58 games and started 57 of those as an offensive player, intercepted 20 passes, and acquired 204 yards of interceptions that were returned. The highlight of his Cowboys’ career was during the 2021 NFL season, in which he intercepted 11 passes, returned two of those for touchdowns, and had 142 yards of interceptions that were returned. These stats put him at the top of the league for that position which earned him a spot among the 2021 NFL Pro Bowlers and 2021 NFL All-Pros.

Throughout all of the news and speculation regarding the New Orleans Saints and their acquisitions of quarterbacks, there hasn’t been any attention to the cornerback position. In 2024, the Saints lost Marshon Lattimore, who had played on the team since 2017 and proved to be an excellent fit for that position, and recently, Paulson Adebo departed in the offseason as a free agent. If the Saints are planning to rebuild their offense, they’re going to need young and experienced players who can score instead of relying on the defense to prevent their opponent from scoring. It hasn’t gone unnoticed that the players they have recently drafted are all under 27 years old, which would make Mr. Diggs a prime candidate for this position. Perhaps his playing style would be a better fit for a team that has proven to be open to ideas brought in from other teams. He may be able to again reach that same level of the 2021 performance if given the chance to demonstrate what he is capable of.
