All-Pro Edge Rusher Skips Mandatory Minicamp in Search of New Contract
As most teams begin mandatory minicamps, this is the time of the football year when we look out for superstars holding out due to their pursuit of a contract. Monday morning, it was stated that Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt did not report to minicamp, as he is pursuing a new deal. With Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett signing a four-year-$160 million deal, with $123.5 million guaranteed, the more time that passes by, the more money Pittsburgh may have to pay their star linebacker. Some other big names that did not show up to the minicamp include Trey Hendrickson and Terry McLaurin, a few of the many players who have thrived since entering the league. However, Watt’s name seems to be the one everyone is waiting to hear about.
T.J. Watt is seeking a new deal as he enters the final year of his contract and would receive roughly a $105,000 fine if he misses all three days of minicamp. However, Pittsburgh is taking a high risk by not paying the All-Pro edge rusher who has recorded double-digit sacks in the past six seasons that he’s played 15+ games. Watt is also a player who nearly broke the NFL's all-time single-season sack record with 22.5 sacks in the 2021 season. Throughout his career, the former Wisconsin Badger has earned seven Pro Bowl appearances, four All-Pro seasons, and the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2021. With the new addition of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the team is surely hoping to sign Watt to a new deal and prepare for an exciting season.
Despite the slow contract talks, the Steelers have made many improvements to the roster, which should keep them ready by the start of the season, if Watt decides to continue this holdout. Rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon has shined through OTAs and practices, giving the team hope that their defensive line will remain elite, even if Watt doesn’t play. Currently, there’s no offer made to T.J. Watt that has gone public. The coaching staff in Pittsburgh continues to develop the team and get them in top shape for the upcoming season.
