Are Expectations Being Set Too High for a 2026 Cowboys 21-Year-Old Rookie Safety?
The Dallas Cowboys focused their attention on one player, Caleb Downs, throughout the lead-up to the 2026 NFL Draft. It was unlikely that Downs would fall to Dallas' 12th overall spot, but as the draft took its course, it became more likely. The Cowboys took their opportunity to trade up when they struck a deal with the Miami Dolphins for the 11th overall pick; Downs has been hyped up to be the best safety prospect in the past 20 years, being compared to the best players to play the position. While he certainly has the potential and can already become one of the best players in the league as a rookie, are the expectations set for him a bit too high?
It was easy to tell that Downs would be an elite player since his first snap at Alabama in his freshman year. While not staying with the Crimson Tide for too long, he made an impression as an elite freshman, a vocal leader, and someone who understood the game quickly, which former legendary coach Nick Saban took note of. His transfer to Ohio State continued to prove the talent he has, winning a national championship in his sophomore season, along with several more individual awards. Everything he has accomplished in his illustrious college career is why many believe he was the best overall player in the entire 2026 NFL Draft; the reason for his fall is due to the lack of respect the NFL has for the safety position, which Dallas obviously did not mind.
Despite the high expectations, the comparisons to elite players that have played the game, and the pressure of playing for the sport’s biggest franchise, Downs and Dallas feel he’s made for this moment. He has put in tremendous effort to reach this moment, and his achievements are a testament to his dedication. The statistics may not fully reflect his contributions, but his tough tackles in the run game, his ability to discourage quarterbacks from targeting him, and his vocal leadership in organizing teammates are precisely what Dallas lacked. Pairing him alongside new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who brings a lot to the table, can help shift this Cowboys defense from one of the worst in the league to possibly the best in the near future. The expectations surrounding what Downs can do for this Cowboys defense might be a bit too high, as if his arrival were the end-all, be-all, but it sure can feel that way once he steps on an NFL field.
