Are Fans Overreacting After the UFC White House Card Announcement?
This past Saturday at UFC 326, the company announced the fights for its highly anticipated White House card on Sunday, June 14th. The event was heavily promoted as one of the biggest and craziest fight cards the UFC has ever put together, officially being named UFC Freedom 250 to commemorate the United States’ 250th birthday. However, just after the announcement, fans were very quick to voice their disappointment in what was supposed to be an insane card. The displeasure from fans seems to be fueled by extremely high expectations for the event. Could this backlash from the fans be justified, or are they overreacting?
First and foremost, the card was never going to please everyone, especially such a diverse community of fans that love the sport. Some fans were excited to see the reveal of the two main title fights, Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje and Alex Pereira vs. Cyril Gane; Others would have preferred different scenarios involving some of those same fighters. Islam Makhachev and Topuria are regarded as the two most electrifying athletes on the roster, and after rumors long ago of a potential fight between the two, fans were hoping that this card could be the birthplace of that duel. Pereira and Jon Jones were another superfight that had been heavily rumored over the past year, with many expecting it to happen due to both fighters expressing interest in a potential heavyweight title fight. Nevertheless, a majority of fans remain satisfied with the title fights that were announced. The rest of the card, however, has received a lot of negative feedback.
Many fans saw missed opportunities with the fighters that were chosen. While Sean O’Malley vs Aiemann Zahabi has the potential to be a banger, many people wanted to see Cory Sandhagen fight ‘Suga’ instead, given that those two are regarded as some of the best strikers of their division. Bo Nickal vs. Kyle Daukaus was controversial for some because neither of the fighters is ranked. Fans would have also loved to see Conor McGregor make his long-awaited return at the card, possibly to fight Michael Chandler, who is fighting Mauricio Ruffy that night. Dana White has recently stated that McGregor was never considered to participate. Despite the criticism and backlash, there is still a chance that the card performs well. Until then, fans will be eagerly waiting to see what the UFC has planned for June 14th.
