Are the 2026 Bears Truly Ready to Compete with the NFC’s Best?
The Chicago Bears enter the 2026 season with expectations that feel distinctly different from those of previous years. For the first time in a long time, the Bears are no longer viewed as a rebuilding team hoping to stay competitive. Instead, they are being discussed as a legitimate contender in the NFC. Last year, they took the league by storm and won the NFC North. Their season ended in heartbreak as they lost to the Rams, but it still does not take away from their success. However, continuing success is far harder than having one breakout year.
Caleb Williams Leading the Next Era
A major reason for the optimism is the continued development of Caleb Williams. The former first-round pick took a major leap forward last season under head coach Ben Johnson, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards while showing improved leadership and poise in big moments. While he did not always play consistently, whenever the team needed him to step up late in the game, he showed up. Johnson has repeatedly emphasized that Williams is still growing within the offense, which is an encouraging sign for a team that already ranked among the NFL’s more explosive units in 2025. The 24-year-old is equipped with all the talent needed, and the young weapons surrounding him could help the offense continue to grow.
Lingering Questions Still Remain
Still, there are legitimate concerns that could hold the team back as they look to compete with the top teams. The defense remains a concern as Chicago failed to address the pass rush, which was one of the biggest weaknesses last year. They have put a lot of effort into remaking the defense, but it remains to be seen if it is enough. Additionally, both the offensive line and wide receiver positions have a lot of uncertainties after key offseason losses. The Bears have the talent to fill in those voids, but it is up to the players to be able to step up.
A Brutal NFC Awaits
The NFC was tough last year, and this year looks like it could be just as dangerous. The Seahawks are attempting to repeat last year's success. The Rams and 49ers are right behind them, as they have been competitive for many years now. The Eagles have shown themselves to be one of the top teams in the league, and 2026 will be no different. Even the rest of the NFC North is going to be fierce, as all teams are extremely talented. No game is ever an easy win, and this year, every week is set to be a tough battle.
The Schedule Will Test Chicago Early
Unfortunately, the schedule for the Bears includes a lot of these top teams. The NFC North continues to get stronger, as the Lions and Packers are aiming at the playoffs with their experienced veterans. Minnesota has put together a receiving trio capable of dominating in 2026. In 2025, it was a close division, and each team looked to have improved in the offseason, setting the stage for another close race. Outside of the division, they have matchups with the Eagles, Patriots, Seahawks, and Bills. This means that not only do they need to compete with the best teams in the NFC, but also face some of the top contenders in the AFC.
Stability Brings Bigger Expectations
The biggest difference, however, is that the Bears finally appear stable. There is continuity at quarterback, confidence in the coaching staff, and a young core that still has room to improve. That does not guarantee a Super Bowl appearance, but it does suggest Chicago is closer than it has been in years. Johnson has Chicago heading in the right direction, but he needs to keep improving the team if he wishes to take the Bears to the next level. Now, the question isn’t simply about making the playoffs. For Chicago, the true test is whether this team can rise to the occasion.
