Are the Minnesota Vikings Poised to Shock the NFL in 2026?

NFL

The 2025 season was largely unmemorable for the Minnesota Vikings. They finished third in the division, with a 9-8 record. While they were close to making the playoffs, it was still far from a good season. The biggest issue was the lack of quality quarterback play, as J.J. McCarthy struggled with poor performances and injuries. As a result, Minnesota needed a quarterback, so they brought in Kyler Murray. The lack of confidence in one of the most important positions in football makes it difficult to have trust in the Vikings. However, there are several reasons to believe that they can turn things around and shock the NFL in 2026.

The biggest reason for this belief is their offensive weapons. Justin Jefferson looks to be fully healthy and is set to remind everyone why he is one of, if not the best, wide receivers in the league. He may have the best support of his career, as Minnesota has assembled a receiver trio capable of dominating the league in 2026. This receiving core is talented enough to make any quarterback look good, and whoever the Vikings decide to start this season will be coming in with a lot of potential. Both McCarthy and Murray are former first-round picks who have shown elite flashes in their careers. With a strong supporting cast, they could be in for a career year and lead the team to a high-powered offense.

Another thing that Minnesota has going for it is its coaching staff. Kevin O’Connell has proven himself a high-quality coach who consistently outperforms expectations. His ability to work with quarterbacks is strong, so there is no reason to believe that he can not help out the current options in the same way that he did with Sam Darnold. The story is similar on the other side of the ball, as Brian Flores is one of the best defensive coordinators in the league. He has shown he can build elite defenses with just a few quality players, a skill few others possess.

Speaking about the defense, thanks to Flores, the Vikings could have another solid year. This past offseason, they lost elite players like Jonathan Greenard. However, they do still have plenty of talent on this side of the ball. Dallas Turner showed flashes of promise and could have a breakout season. The defensive system has produced well from most players who have played in it, and it should be the same story in 2026. Minnesota may not have the best defense in the league, but it should still be well above average.

The Vikings have a tough schedule in 2026 and are in one of the toughest divisions in football. Despite this, there are many reasons that they could see a strong year. A combination of offensive weapons, elite coaching, and a solid defense is enough to carry most teams to the playoffs. That being said, it will not be easy for them. This season, they have a high ceiling, but if they cannot get good play from the quarterback position, it could go south quickly. If Minnesota reaches its ceiling, it could shock the NFL in 2026.
