Are the Vikings Relying Too Heavily on Their 23-Year-Old Pass Rusher in 2026?

NFL

The Vikings’ offseason has been largely centered on upgrading the offensive side of the ball, with clear efforts to add more consistency and firepower. This has seemed worthwhile, as they have formed a group of receivers that is capable of dominating next season. While those moves have drawn most of the attention, the defense has taken a step back due to multiple departures in free agency and roster turnover. As a result, Minnesota may be leaning more heavily on younger, less proven players to step into larger roles. It could quickly become a setback as the Vikings aim to bounce back in 2026 and return to the playoffs.

One of the biggest moves of the Vikings' offseason came when they traded Jonathan Greenard. The 28-year-old is coming off a rough season, as he only had three sacks. However, he still made a clear impact and drew a lot of attention. The former third-round pick had reached at least 12 sacks in each of the previous two seasons. Unfortunately, the cost of keeping him became something that Minnesota no longer felt like it could afford. Luckily for them, they have a strong option to replace him.

Dallas Turner is heading into his third career season after being drafted in the first round in 2024. His rookie season was a bit of a disappointment as he only had three sacks. However, this was likely because he was lower on the depth chart rather than his talent. This past season, he showed his potential, recording eight sacks and four forced fumbles. The 23-year-old was given a chance due to injuries, and clearly, the Vikings were pleased. Combining Turner’s breakout with the cost of Greenard made it an easy decision to move on from the veteran.

This move does come with a lot of risk. Minnesota has not invested much defensively which puts a lot of pressure on Turner to succeed. Since he would be a starter every game, he would need to be able to produce consistently. Having a few splashes as a rotational player can be a lot simpler than facing the attention that a starter gets. Additionally, now that there is more film on the the young pass rusher, opponents can find a way to scheme against him. None of this is to say that he cannot step up, but it will take a lot of hard work and preparation.

Ultimately, the Vikings are betting that Turner is ready to become the centerpiece of their pass rush. At just 23 years old, he has already shown flashes of becoming one of the league’s more disruptive defenders. However, replacing a proven veteran like Greenard is far from guaranteed and comes with significant pressure. If Turner can continue developing and handle the increased attention from opposing offenses, Minnesota’s gamble could pay off in a major way. If not, the lack of proven depth on the defensive side of the ball could become a major issue throughout the 2026 season.
