Battle of the Birds: 2026 Blue Jays Get Ahead in Series with 3-1 Victory Against Cardinals
With the MLB Trade Deadline on Monday and the MLB Postseason just two months away, the stakes are high for every team. Both sides of this matchup are low in their divisions: Toronto is fifth in the American League East with a 50-59 record, and St. Louis is fourth in the National League Central with a 54-55 record. Despite a rough season, the Jays seem to be in a bright spot, having just won their first series since the beginning of July, and are starting their all-star Dylan Cease. The Cardinals also haven’t won a series since early July and are just below the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have one more win than they do. At this point in the season, these opponents aren’t just fighting to win a game; they're fighting to stay alive.
Tonight’s game started as a pitcher’s duel until the top of the fifth when Jordan Walker’s single scored Nathan Church, making it 1-0 Cardinals. In the sixth, back-to-back doubles from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto made it a tie game. Finally, pinch hitter Luis Urías made contact with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to score two and make it 3-1. The Jays then brought in their all-star closer, Louis Varland, to get his 24th save of the year and win the game.
Pinch Hitter Pull Through
In the bottom of the eighth, John Schneider made the risky decision to pinch hit Urías for Davis Schneider with the bases loaded in a tie game. Something finally went right for the Jays as the 29-year-old hit a single to score George Springer and speedy Daulton Varsho. This team hasn’t done well with bases loaded this year, hitting only .186, the lowest in the Majors. So, this trade paying off in this way is golden to them. Toronto received Urías in a Minor League trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 20th. Just two days later, his contract was selected, and he’s stayed ever since. Just a month in, the utility player may only be hitting .214, but his OPS is .750. The manager knew he needed someone to make contact, and this righty was someone he could rely on. If the Jays’ front office makes a trade as good as this one by Monday, they may have a shot at the playoffs.
Cy Young Cease
Toronto’s 2026 all-star starter pitched his 21st game tonight. The 30-year-old has previously been known for his inconsistency, with one season posting Cy Young Award stats and the next raising his ERA by over 1.00. Toronto took a chance on him by making what was considered one of the riskiest offseason moves this year. While this season is still following that pattern, hopefully he might finally reach every pitcher’s dream. The Georgia native is third in the MLB in strikeouts with 174, sixth in ERA with 2.41, and 15th in WHIP with 1.04. In his six innings against the Cardinals, he had only three hits, one run, and three walks. He also rounded it out with seven strikeouts. Cease has had seven games, almost half of his starts, with double-digit strikeouts this year. If the Blue Jays do squeeze into the playoffs this year, it will be with their star starter at the helm.
