Bears Add Former Colts Defensive Tackle to Strengthen Defense in 2026

NFL

Despite a heartbreaking end, the 2025 season was a memorable year for the Chicago Bears.  They exceeded expectations in year one with Ben Johnson, and all eyes are on how they build for next year. With this in mind, one of the clear areas of need was the defense, which was the team's greatest weakness this season. This focus became evident by the reported signing of defensive tackle Neville Gallimore. According to Ian Rapoport, Gallimore is signing a two-year deal worth $12 million.

Gallimore played at the University of Oklahoma for four years. Following that, he was picked by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round in 2020. The 29-year-old played with the Cowboys for four seasons, during which he appeared in a total of 52 games. He then spent a year with the Rams in 2024 and a final year with the Colts this past season. Gallimore has played a total of 83 games, with a total of seven and a half sacks and 147 tackles.

The defensive line was one of the biggest needs for the team. There was virtually no pressure, and the team got gashed in the run game all year long. Chicago allowed the 10th-most points per game and fourth-most yards per game. It was clear they needed to add help, and while this is not the flashiest option, it is a quality add. His stats make it is clear he is not an elite pass rusher, but having a rotation of quality players is sure to help. Additionally, his ability in the run game should help anchor the middle of the defensive line. The affordable contract also makes it easier for the Bears to add talent to the rest of the roster.

Ultimately, the addition of Gallimore gives the Chicago Bears another piece to help stabilize the defensive line. While he may not be the flashiest signing of the offseason, his experience and ability to contribute in a rotation could prove valuable. Chicago’s defense struggled to generate consistent pressure last season, making depth along the interior a clear priority. If Gallimore can provide solid snaps and help clog running lanes, this signing could quietly improve the overall unit. As the offseason continues, moves like this could play an important role in shaping a stronger Bears defense heading into 2026.
