Bears Turnaround Has Their Coach Climbing the Award Ladder

NFL

As the season continues, the Chicago Bears find themselves in an unfamiliar position, in the playoff picture. Chicago has not made the postseason since 2020. Last year the team managed only five wins, and this season they already sit at six. While there are many reasons for this sudden turnaround, one stands out above the rest, the hiring of first-year head coach Ben Johnson. Going from a disappointing season to becoming competitive in one year highlights the work ethic, effort, and leadership that Johnson and his staff have brought to the organization. There may still be plenty of football left to play, but this rise could make Johnson’s case for Coach of the Year undeniable.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Chicago’s resurgence is the rapid improvement of its offense. The historic franchise has long been known for inconsistent offensive play, but 2025 has been a different story. The Bears now rank in the top ten in both points per game and total yards per game. Former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson built his reputation on creativity and effective play calling, which made him one of the league’s top coaching candidates. Bears fans hoped that success would carry over to Chicago, and so far it has been implemented more effectively each week.

Leading up to the Week Five bye, the offense showed promise but remained a work in progress. While it still is not always pretty, they began to find their spark in Week Six. The running game and offensive line have developed chemistry and are now the strengths of the team. This balance has opened up the playbook and created a more dynamic attack. The passing game still has room to grow, but rookie quarterback Caleb Williams is becoming increasingly comfortable each week. As all the pieces continue to mesh, the offense is showing early signs of becoming an elite unit.

The rest of the roster has not progressed as quickly. The defense has battled injuries throughout the season and currently allows the fifth most points per game. Special teams have also struggled, particularly in coverage, where the Bears have allowed several big returns while failing to generate any of their own. Chicago’s kicking unit has been inconsistent from long range, adding to the concern. Both units will need improvement if the Bears hope to remain competitive, but so far their shortcomings have not derailed the team’s overall progress.

The combination of strong coaching and offensive growth has given Chicago a foundation to build on. Compared to last season, there is a noticeable increase in energy, effort, and belief throughout the locker room. The team’s chemistry continues to improve each week, creating a more cohesive and confident group. If Johnson can sustain this momentum and keep the Bears pushing toward the playoffs, it may be difficult to deny him recognition as the NFL Coach of the Year.
