Big Blue Men’s College Basketball Lands Elite 2027 Five-Star Commitment

Much has been made of Mark Pope’s time as the head coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. With one of the most daunting rosters on paper in the 2025-2026 season, the Wildcats failed to make the Sweet 16. A disappointing end to a season with so much promise. After snagging the commitment of the Ex-Iowa State star Milan Momcilovic, Pope has also sealed the commitment of one of the top 10 prospects of the 2027 class, Ryan Hampton.

Much has been made about the Kentucky head coach's ability to recruit star players out of high school. Some have gone as far as to state that this is the biggest weakness for Pope and would hold the program back from winning another national title. He has built a reputation for putting all his eggs in one basket and missing out. This was the case the previous offseason, Tyran Stokes. The Wildcats went all in on Stokes, only to not receive his commitment and miss the opportunity to recruit other five-star players. Outside of two five-star players born in Kentucky, Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson, he has not landed anyone from out of state. This morning, Pope was able to put this label to bed.

The Kentucky Wildcats landed the commitment of the number six player in the 2027 class, Ryan Hampton. A Texas native who is playing his high school ball in Florida is a six-foot-six two-way monster. Without any ties to the state or the University, Pope and new associate coach Mo Williams simply laid out the best pitch. Hampton stated that his comfort level with the two coaches was one of the main driving factors in his commitment to Lexington. The soon-to-be high school senior’s commitment to Kentucky immediately makes him the highest-ranked recruit during Pope’s time under the helm. Even though it will be another 365 days till this top high schooler is in a Wildcats uniform, there is a newfound buzz at the University of Kentucky for the first time in the post-Callipari era.

The timing of this commitment could not come at a more critical time for Coach Pope. It has been no secret that it has been a rocky start for the Ex-BYU head coach during his time in Kentucky. After two disappointing seasons, this year was looked at by many to be a make-or-break year. He is already off to a good start by shaking the “can’t-recruit” label. With a year to wait, time will tell if Hampton is the next Big Blue star. One thing is for sure: Pope is not taking any risks when it comes to his job this season. Proving he can recruit outside of the state is a major starting point for the third-year Kentucky coach.
