Broncos Extend One-Time Pro Bowl Receiver

NFL

On July 28th, 2025, the Denver Broncos announced they have agreed to terms with their long-time WR Courtland Sutton on a four-year $92 million deal, first reported on X by Jordan Schultz. Sutton was not practicing during team periods the last few days with the understanding that a deal was imminent. Sutton was set to make $14.1 million under the last year of the four-year deal he signed with Denver back in 2021. The Broncos lock in their top WR and the clear favorite to collect a large amount of targets from second-year QB Bo Nix, until he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the 2030 offseason.

Drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former SMU Mustang was joining a rebuilding Broncos team that was struggling to find consistency at QB. Peyton Manning retired after the 2015 season, resulting in the Broncos turning their focus towards developing 2015 seventh-rounder Trevor Siemian or 2016 first-round selection Paxton Lynch. Brock Osweiler returned to Denver for a handful of games, but all three QBs would never start another game for the Broncos after the 2017 season. Even after 2017, the QB situation was inadequate for playoff success.

In Sutton’s rookie year, the second-rounder caught passes from Case Keenum, who had just pulled off the Minneapolis Miracle in the NFC Divisional Game against the Saints, but the Broncos still missed the playoffs, going 6-10. Sutton finished his rookie year with 42 receptions for over 700 yards and four touchdowns. In 2019, the Broncos had Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, and Drew Lock under center, which still wasn’t enough for a playoff berth, but Sutton had 72 receptions for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns en route to his first and only Pro Bowl invitation. 2020 was underwhelming as Sutton missed Week One with a shoulder injury and then tore his ACL the following week. From 2021-2023, Sutton failed to reach 1,000 yards due to the below-average production from Teddy Bridgewater in 2021 and Russell Wilson in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Knowing that Sutton was one QB away from having a season like 2019, Sean Payton and the Broncos selected Bo Nix from Oregon, helping Sutton achieve his second 1,000-yard season in seven years, a handful of career bests, and the first playoff berth for Denver since Manning won Super Bowl 50.

Now that Sutton is locked into the plans for Denver’s future, he looks to build on the previously established chemistry with Nix. Sutton will be 30 years old in October, so time is running out for the second-rounder to be considered one of the top-tier receivers in the NFL. Keep an eye out for Denver’s offense in a respectable AFC West that has been dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs for almost 10 years. With newly acquired TE Evan Engram and RB J.K. Dobbins, in addition to the developing stars like Marvin Mims, Devaughn Vele, and 2025 rookie Pat Bryant, the Broncos' offense could be very dangerous.
