Brooklyn Nets Offer Former LSU Guard Low-Ball Deal After A Messy Situation
After a spectacular regular season, he averaged 24 points per game. The Nets' shooting guard Cam Thomas has received what many are saying is a low-ball offer from the Brooklyn Nets. Thomas and the Nets have been dealing with a messy situation over the last few weeks. Thomas' rookie deal was up, and he has been a restricted free agent this summer. The Nets don't seem to share the same sentiment as many; Thomas is a star in many eyes and has even been mentioned in trade talks due to his value. The Nets are continuing to stall on a deal. The 23-year-old restricted free agent is still without a new contract about a month into free agency.
One of the Nets coaches said about Thomas, “We love Cam. We think he’s one of the best scoring guards in the league, and an underrated playmaker.” The coach who said this was anonymous, but it makes you question whether you think so highly of him, then why lowball him? What makes the situation worse than just a bad offer is that Thomas has almost no choice but to accept it. Other teams can offer up $14.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception as a deal. The Nets are currently offering him a two-year, $28 million contract, but Thomas wants to sign a four-year deal worth around $100 million, which is more in line with the starting player salary.
All of Thomas's averages have risen since joining the league. He has been one of the few bright spots the Brooklyn Nets have had since losing Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden. Thomas, by the way, is the youngest player in NBA history to score 40-plus points in three straight games last season. It's possible that Thomas accepts the qualifying offer and stays with the Nets, but can it also be possible that he becomes another team's gain in a championship run? It remains to be seen, but it looks like he is more likely to be retained by the Nets. It won’t mean he won’t leave later; if anything, it makes it more likely because of the disrespect shown by that deal. Thomas has until October 1st to accept a qualifying offer to remain a Brooklyn Net.
