Can a 22-Year-Old Rookie WR Find Immediate Success with the 2026 Steelers?

NFL

One of the Pittsburgh Steelers' biggest offensive issues in 2025 was their wide receiver room. Behind D.K. Metcalf, the Steelers didn’t have any other great playmaker at the position, and it showed, as they ranked 22nd in passing. The black and gold addressed this glaring issue by trading for the Colts 28-year-old wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and trading up six spots in the 2026 NFL Draft to select Germie Bernard in the second round. The six-foot-one receiver out of Alabama had a great senior season with the Crimson Tide, catching 64 passes for 862 yards and seven touchdowns, all team-leading. Bernard seemingly comes into Pittsburgh as the favorite for the wide receiver three role, behind veterans Metcalf and Pittman. His biggest competition will be Roman Wilson. The third-year receiver has never found his footing with the Steelers, but fans of the black and gold are still hopeful. While the 22-year-old doesn't have blazing speed, running a 4.48-second 40-yard dash, being taken 47th overall makes him the Steelers' highest-drafted receiver since Santonio Holmes went 25th overall in 2006.

The Steelers' biggest change came in their coaching room when former head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down, and Super Bowl XLV-winning coach Mike McCarthy was hired in his place. McCarthy immediately began reshaping the Steelers' coaching staff, bringing in Brian Angelichio as offensive coordinator and Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator, among others. With McCarthy’s longtime gunslinger, Aaron Rodgers, returning for one more year in the Steel City, a new and improved passing game is expected in 2026, perfect for Bernard to slide in and make an impact in his rookie season. With both Metcalf and Pittman standing six-foot-four, the wide receiver’s frame will force him into the slot receiver role, where his notable route-running and consistent hands will thrive. According to Matthew Marczi from Steelers Depot, the former Alabama pass-catcher “has no one quality that sets him apart, but he has the qualities of a reliable professional. Spring reports characterized him as a quick learner who could contribute early.” There aren’t many better to learn from than Rodgers, Metcalf, and Pittman, so Bernard only has to rely on himself to beat out the other guys in Pittsburgh’s wide receiver room.

Outside of Wilson, who Bernard likely already has the edge over, the Steelers have pro-bowler Ben Skowronek and rookie Kaden Wetjen. Both ‘Benny Skow’ and the rookie are primarily special-teamers, with Skowronek earning Pro Bowl honors for his play as a gunner in 2025 and Wetjen being a two-time Johnny ‘The Jet’ Rodgers Award winner. He also has an edge over any other player the Steelers may sign because of his versatility. Former Titans general manager Ran Carthon commented on this, stating, “I think he can play all three positions. X, Z, he can definitely play the F. I’m gonna push back a little bit. I don’t know that he’s gonna primarily play in the slot. To me, this is a Chris Godwin clone in the way he plays the game.” The 47th overall pick already has a high ceiling in the NFL, and his only flaw is his speed, which remains solid. He gets to join a team with a track record of success, led by a four-time MVP quarterback. Bernard only has himself to beat if he wants to shine in the Steel City in 2026.

My name is Ryan Allman, I am 19 years old, and I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I lived for 10 years before moving out near Philadelphia. I was born into a sports family, with my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all playing football, and supporting the Steelers. I was formed from this, and to this day, sports, especially football, mean everything to me. I myself played football throughout high school, where I was a defensive end. Through my never-ending love of sports and pursuit of film and writing, I am excited for this wonderful opportunity from EnforceTheSport.
