Can a 28-Year-Old Defender’s Impending Return from Injury Improve Los Blancos' Defense?

Real Madrid could soon get a major boost to its defense as Éder Militão nears a return from another lengthy injury. The Brazilian center-back has been sidelined since April after suffering a serious proximal biceps femoris tendon injury in his left leg during a La Liga match against Alavés. He underwent surgery in Finland and was initially expected to miss around five months. After spending much of the summer recovering, the 28-year-old Brazilian international has now passed his latest medical assessment and entered the final stage of his rehabilitation. He could return as early as October, although Real Madrid is expected to remain cautious with his recovery.

That timing could be extremely important for José Mourinho. Real Madrid's defense has already experienced several problems during the opening months of the 2026-27 season. The club is also dealing with injuries to other stars, such as Kylian Mbappé, who injured his knee after scoring for France on international duty, and Ibrahima Konaté, who returned from France duty with a collateral ligament injury in his right leg, leaving Mourinho with another question at center-back. The Brazilian defender was unavailable from the start of the campaign, while Raúl Asencio has also dealt with injury problems and legal issues. The potential return of the center-back therefore comes at a particularly useful time. Before his injury problems became so persistent, Militão established himself as one of the most important defenders in Madrid's squad. His combination of speed, strength and ability to defend large spaces made him particularly valuable for a team that often plays with an aggressive defensive line. Mourinho could benefit from having that profile available again.

Dean Huijsen has emerged as an important option in the new-look defense, while Antonio Rüdiger continues to provide experience. Konaté's arrival was also meant to give Mourinho another physical, athletic center-back. Adding a healthy defending stalwart to that group would give the manager considerably more flexibility when choosing his defensive setup. However, an important question remains about his return. Militão has endured an extraordinary number of injuries over the past few seasons. His latest injury was his third major long-term absence since 2023, with his previous problems including ACL injuries to both knees. His accumulated time away from the pitch has reportedly reached 781 days over the last three seasons. That history means Real Madrid cannot expect the defensive veteran to return to his best level immediately.

The club will likely prioritize his long-term fitness over getting him back onto the pitch as quickly as possible. Mourinho has already emphasized that he does not want to take unnecessary risks with injured players, particularly during a season in which Madrid will be competing on multiple fronts. If this Real Madrid star returns healthy and gradually regains his previous level, his comeback could be one of the most important developments for Madrid's defense this season. Los Blancos do not necessarily need another new defender. If Real Madrid’s medical staff can resolve one of the squad's recurring injury issues and help the Brazilian stay fit, they finally need one of their most talented defenders to stay healthy.
