Can Anyone Stop the 2026 Sunshine Double Champion in May?

Jannik Sinner is having the most dominant runs that tennis has ever seen. His comeback from his loss at the Australian Open Finals has been near perfect, winning every Masters 1000 Tournament he has entered. This included completing the Sunshine Double, winning the Indian Wells and Miami Open back-to-back, truly a tremendous feat. Beyond this, he’s currently playing with a 30-2 win/loss ratio this year, dropping under 10 sets across all tournaments this year. The Sunshine Double Champion has also paved his path as one of the greatest of all time, not only by being ranked first for more than 70 weeks altogether, a number that puts him in the top 15 of all time, but by showing that he is in a league of his own.

Players having dominant years is nothing new; Roger Federer’s 2006, Rafael Nadal’s 2010, and Novak Djokovic’s 2011 all come to mind. These are all times where a great player has a year where they hit their stride, where even their contemporaries have a hard time playing against them. Sinner’s year so far is a different story. Yes, he’s been dominant, but this run has the potential to put him in history. His tournament wins are likely going to see him complete the Career Slam and Career Golden Masters in the same month. This would also make him one of two players to complete the latter, and the youngest person to ever do it. All of this before turning 25 has to put his name in consideration for being one of the greatest of all time. The biggest difference is that Sinner isn’t playing hard-fought match after hard-fought match; his contemporaries aren’t peers for him like they were for Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. There’s only one player on Sinner’s level, and that is Carlos Alcaraz

Tennis is a sport about direct competition. The most popular format is singles, and that’s a game where a fan is watching two players face each other all out. With Sinner’s dominance on full display, it’s apparent he needs his adversary back on the court in order to keep the competition alive. Alcaraz has been out due to injury for some time and has withdrawn from every major tournament for the foreseeable future. In the ‘Big Three Era,’ not only were the three at the top contending for the top spot, but other players like Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka posed genuine threats. Now, the only threats to Alcaraz and Sinner are each other, and with one out right now, there is no one stopping Sinner from winning nearly every tournament for the rest of the year.
