Can Burnley Dig Themselves Out of Relegation with a Win Over Brighton in the 25-26 Season?

Brighton make the trip to Turf Moor to play a Premier League match against Burnley. The Clarets are in danger of relegation with only seven matches to play. Burnley sit in 19th place with a full 11 points needed to claw out of relegation. Meanwhile, Brighton sits in 10th place, fighting for a spot in European competition after they broke their winless streak of one win in 13 matches. Will Burnley be able to emulate Brighton’s consistent place in the Premier League, or will the Clarets continue their reputation as a yo-yo club, bouncing from the Premier League to the Championship? Can Brighton beat a team in the relegation zone when they mainly struggle against them despite beating most of the top-five teams?

Brighton Breakdown

After the end of the international break, Brighton & Hove Albion have won four of their last five matches, beating Premier League title-defenders Liverpool 2-1. Due to his 10th yellow card of the season, Lewis Dunk will not be able to play in the next two matches: Burnley away and Tottenham away. Olivier Boscagli is the automatic substitute for Dunk’s absence. Adam Webster will not be available in the center of defense as he has been rehabbing a season-ending knee injury. Another player who is out for the rest of the season is Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas. He sustained his knee injury in the Aston Villa match, a loss at the Amex Stadium, 3-4.

Brighton must clean up their offensive play; they often take many shots, but rarely convert them into goals. Danny Welbeck is one of their key strikers who racks up goals for the Seagulls; however, their German coach must not rely on him too much, as he is 35. Fabian Hürzeler, Brighton’s coach, should be thinking about utilizing Georginio Rutter more to gain more experience in one of the toughest leagues in Europe. Hürzeler must also stay focused until the end of the season, as Bayer Leverkusen has identified him as their replacement for their current coach. Many of the Brighton players, such as Jan Paul van Hecke, Bart Verbruggen, and Carlos Baleba, have other clubs circling them in hopes of securing their signatures. Van Hecke and Verbruggen are wanted by Tottenham both before and after the appointment of Spurs’ new coach, Roberto de Zerbi, who is a former Brighton coach. The South Coast team is known for its many strategic transfers, buying low and selling high; this was one of the reasons de Zerbi left Brighton, as he did not agree with the transfer strategy and wanted to keep certain players. As the season comes to a close, Brighton players must stay focused on the game rather than their next potential signing.

Burley Breakdown

Burnley are fighting against the clock to establish themselves as a permanent Premier League club. They have bounced between the Premier League and Championship for the past few seasons. Now, they have only seven matches left to win enough points to stay in the league. They could gain 21 points if they win all their remaining matches. However, to avoid relegation, they need to win at least 11 points and hope that Tottenham, in 17th, and West Ham United, in 18th, either draw or lose in their last few matches. Josh Laurent will be suspended for this match as he received a late red card in Burnley’s previous match against Fulham, which was a loss: 3-1. Burnley currently has a small injury crisis near the end of their season, which does not help their campaign to stay in the Premier League, as Axel Tuanzebe has a calf issue, Josh Cullen and Zeki Amdouni have knee injuries, Jordan Beyer is dealing with a hamstring problem, and Connor Roberts sustained a lower leg injury.

Match Expectations

Viewers can expect Brighton to play a possession-based game. Hürzeler has emphasized the importance of a large percentage of possession, as they tend to build out from the back. Brighton uses its goalkeeper to direct long passes to its explosive, dynamic wingers: Kaoru Mitoma on the left and Yankuba Minteh on the right. Both wingers provide quick pace and balance each other out, as Mitoma is an established player in the Premier League with Brighton, while Minteh is still coming into his form and style of play. The Seagulls favor using their central defenders to strategically pass the ball through the center of the pitch to cut out the opposition’s midfield. One way Burnley can mitigate this strategy of long passes through the center is to tighten their midfield and to closely man-mark Brighton’s own midfielders, who are often the linchpin in moving the ball forward very quickly. Under Scott Parker, Burney is heavily focused on their defense. Parker often deploys five players at the back, with the flexibility to move up or down the pitch. Brighton will have to be wary of Burnley’s tactics as Parker tailors his strategy to his next opponent.

Match Predictions

Brighton have looked strong after digging themselves out of their one win in 13 matches. Their win against Liverpool has boosted their morale, and the international and FA Cup breaks have given some players much-needed rest. They look like the stronger team on paper; however, the Seagulls have a reputation for winning against some of the higher-placed teams but struggling, and sometimes losing or drawing, against teams in danger of relegation. Burnley could take advantage of their poor form against relegation rivals and secure the three points they desperately need to stay in the Premier League. Brighton has the edge over Burnley; therefore, the prediction of this match is a win for the South Coast team, 2-1.
