Can Colombia Inch Closer to World Cup Qualification Versus Peru?
Colombia’s current position in the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifying standings is sixth place with 20 points. This is a promising sign for their qualification for the next World Cup. Their recent form has been a bit inconsistent; however, they have been able to show flashes of their brilliance through players like Luis Díaz and James Rodriguez. Colombia has played 14 out of 18 fixtures in the qualifying phase, with only four more games to go. They are approaching the final stretch in securing a place in the 2026 World Cup. To qualify, they have to win key matches coming up and against direct rivals in qualification, such as Paraguay and Venezuela.
The first step to success would be to beat Peru in the upcoming game in June. This is a very doable feat considering Peru is sitting in the ninth position with 10 points in all of these qualifiers. Colombia should be able to get a positive result, keep the pace, and possibly make the gap between their nearest competitor in the standings, Venezuela, with 15 points. If Colombia wins and Venezuela ties or loses their next game, it’ll make Colombia's chances of qualifying much higher. Luis Díaz should be able to produce problems for the Peruvian defense and secure the victory on the day of the game.
The next challenge would be Argentina, which Colombia has beaten before, but realistically, all they need is a positive or neutral result by winning or tying that game. The remaining two fixtures in the qualifiers are against Bolivia, and the final game is against Venezuela, which, as mentioned before, is a direct competitor to Colombia’s qualifying spot. Columbia winning the games against Bolivia and Venezuela would be the decisive moments that would stamp their ticket to the 2026 World Cup. This would be the first World Cup Colombia has attended since failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a less-than-acceptable qualification campaign. Los Cafeteros have had relatively successful showings at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and will be looking to at the very least show a respectable performance in comparison to their last two World Cup appearances. Colombians worldwide are itching to see Colombia play in the World Cup once again and celebrate their goals and wins with all the joy the beautiful people of Colombia have.
