Can Miami Heat Star Take the Next Step as a Superstar?

NBA

As the 2025-2026 NBA season approaches, the Miami Heat has made significant changes to their roster. Following the dramatic and disappointing departure of Jimmy Butler, the team is in need of a new leader to change its fortunes. Butler is regarded as one of the best players to ever don a Heat jersey. He led the team to the NBA Finals twice, in 2020 during the bubble and again in 2023. He was instrumental in winning the Eastern Conference Championship in both years and earned multiple all-star selections, including being named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2023 and the All-NBA Third Team in 2021. Known for elevating his performances in the playoffs, he earned the nickname “Playoff Jimmy.” Now, with the former face of the franchise moving to Golden State, there is increased pressure on all-star talent Bam Adebayo.

Adebayo possesses all the tools necessary for success. He is already considered one of the league’s premier defenders, having been named to the All-NBA Defensive Team four times and finishing as a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award. He can guard all five positions, which is a rarity in today’s NBA. It’s clear that Miami’s defense improves significantly when he’s on the court. Beyond his defensive prowess, Adebayo has been working on his jump shot. In 2024, he averaged 0.6 three-point attempts per game, shooting 35.7%. In 2025, his attempts rose to 2.8 per game, while maintaining the same shooting percentage of 35.7%. This marks a noticeable transition from being a non-shooter to developing into a respectable floor spacer. With Kel'el Ware now sharing the frontcourt with him, Adebayo has even more opportunities to reach his full potential.

In short, Bam Adebayo is on the verge of superstar status. If he looks to continue to improve his shooting, maintains his offensive efficiency, and embraces a more defined leadership role, he could have another breakout year in the 2026 season. Basketball fans recognize his defensive capabilities, as evidenced by his accolades. The next step is for him to showcase his offensive talents to the league and assert his dominance.
