Can Southampton Topple Arsenal in the 25-26 FA Cup Quarterfinals?

The quarterfinals of the FA Cup are set with Southampton hosting Arsenal on Saturday, April 4th at 3:00 p.m. EDT. Arsenal continues on the hunt for a piece of silverware after missing out on winning the Carabao Cup; Manchester City beat them 2-0 to win the trophy. This dwindles Arsenal’s hope to win a quadruple to only a treble. Southampton are punching above their weight as the Championship side, who are currently in sixth place, take on first-place Arsenal of the Premier League. Can Arsenal continue their journey for silverware and the prestigious treble? Or will Southampton kill a Premier League giant to gain entry into the semifinals?

Southampton Breakdown

Southampton recently announced that the FA Cup clash against Arsenal is a sold-out match. The Saints also had an open training session, where fans could watch a training session at their stadium, St. Mary’s. Mads Roerslev is ruled out for the upcoming match due to a season-ending injury to his Achilles tendon. The Championship-side club has two fitness doubts for Welington with a muscular injury and Jay Robinson with a quad injury. The Brazilian and the Englishman could be on the bench as their injuries are not overly severe. On a positive note, Léo Scienza has recovered from his groin injury, and he is expected to play. A key player for Southampton will be Cyle Larin. The Canadian striker will prove to be an important player as Southampton should target getting on the score sheet early against Arsenal.

Arsenal Breakdown

Arsenal will be sulking and swamped with disappointment after losing the Carabao Cup final against their rivals, Manchester City. Their FA Cup campaign does not look stable, as many Arsenal players have sustained injuries over the March international break. Martin Zubimendi withdrew from Spain’s training camp with discomfort in his knee. Piero Hincapie also withdrew from Ecuadorian duty and will not participate in the match against the Netherlands on March 31st. Leandro Trossard removed himself from the Belgian squad and did not feature in any of their matches, citing a hip injury. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka did not play for England and returned early to Arsenal’s training grounds. Noni Madueke featured in England's draw against Uruguay but was subbed off early due to an injury. England’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, notes that Madueke withdrew because of a “knock.” Many of Arsenal’s regular starting defensive players are injured as well, including William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Jurriën Timber. Crucial midfielders Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino are also facing injury problems. Arsenal looks to be in an injury crisis. However, head coach Mikel Arteta uses these tactics to psyche out opponents to underestimate them. He has previously drummed up drama and speculation around injured players, but he adds their names to the starting lineups anyway.

Match Expectations

Southampton’s current interim coach, Tonda Eckert, was appointed in November of 2025. He arrived when the club was 21st in the Championship table, and they are currently sixth. His tactics of using five or more players to go forward in order to pin the opposition in defensive positions seem to be working. He employs a horseshoe formation that allows quick passing and the ability to break down defensive lines.

Meanwhile, Arsenal likes to build out from the back, using their goalkeeper, David Raya, to send long balls to the wingers. The Gunners prefer to have longer sequences of possession, and they press high up on the pitch. Arteta’s tactics favor the midfielders, and these players are often the playmakers, racking up many assists. Both teams strategically use free kicks, corners, and throw-ins. Arsenal is the side that uses them more often, as many of their goals in the Premier League have come from corners and free kicks.

Match Predictions

Viewers can expect a tense match between these two sides. The competition only gets more difficult in the later stages of the FA Cup. Both teams will be vying for the semifinals and a chance to play at Wembley. Depending on whether the injury crisis in Arsenal’s team is valid, the squad will be significantly weakened, giving a small opening and advantage to Southampton. However, Arsenal should not be ruled out, as they are a formidable team with a deep bench of established and new talent. Overall, Arsenal still has the edge of being the more experienced team, and already playing in a tournament final this season, it will give them more motivation to win this match. Arsenal should still win this match by a score of 3-1.
