Can the 2026 Giants 25-Year-Old Cornerback Have a Career Resurgence?

NFL

Giants cornerback Deonte Banks has had a tough start to his career. Over three seasons in New York, the Giants haven't gotten the defensive back they envisioned when they selected him in the first round, but things seem to be trending upward in year four. The start of the 2026 season has been a great one, as the 25-year-old delivered a game-winning pick-six against the Arizona Cardinals during their week four contest. This clutch 98-yard play won the game for the G-men and earned the former first-round pick defensive player of the week honors. Not only that, but it also reminded fans why the Giants took him with the 24th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

It hasn't just been one play that has highlighted Banks' skill set, though. The start of this season has been the best of the former Maryland Terrapin's career for many reasons. Over the first four games, he has totaled five tackles, three pass deflections, and, of course, the one pick he returned for a 98-yard score. Pro Football Focus has even rated the young corner with a 71.3 defensive grade, ranking him 17th among 102 qualified cornerbacks for the 2026 season. For a player who has seemed to get worse throughout the last two seasons, this current play on the field is extremely valuable to the Giants and, frankly, what they have been waiting to see. The young corner is definitely not a finished product because of his hot start, but his early-season stats show he could be in for a great year, and a career resurgence is a definite possibility. Entering the league, Banks showed flashes in his rookie year. He started 15 games in 2023, totaling 64 tackles, 11 pass deflections, and two interceptions. The following 2024 season, the regression started as he started 14 games, but his performance dipped tremendously, leading to a 2025 season with just six starts, no interceptions, and just five passes defended.

The declining play had the youngster primarily play special teams last season as a kick returner, but with the departure of cornerback Cor’Dale Flott this offseason, the 25-year-old got what's likely his last chance at redemption. He has taken this opportunity and ran with it. Instead of letting a hard last two years define him as a player, he is proving the coaching staff and fans who were writing him off wrong. The new coach, John Harbaugh, has definitely been a great help as he is a fresh new face in this organization with a straightforward approach: get his players better and move forward rather than dwelling on a past he wasn't even there for. According to the Giants website, coach Harbaugh has been one of the biggest motivators for Banks, telling him, “We know what you're capable of; let's go play some good football.’ For a player who needed to find consistent play, the new coaching staff seems to have done wonders for his confidence on the field. The former first-round selection has given Giants fans hope for a possible career resurgence. Whether that can become reality is entirely up to him. Will he crumble after his big moment, or will it be just one of his highlight plays in a turnaround career?
