Can the 2026 Giants be Serious Contenders?

NFL

The New York Giants found a way to get a much-needed win on Sunday, cementing a 27-21 overtime win over the Houston Texans. The Giants fumbled a late lead and let Houston force overtime, but dominated the extra period to earn their fourth win of the season. New York came into this week with many question marks about their quarterback situation, running back room, and ability to win close games. The G-Men answered all those questions with a big offensive game and a lockdown overtime defense. So, the next question is: Can the 2026 Giants be serious contenders?

The biggest factor in determining whether the Giants are true contenders is their quarterback. After losing starter Jaxson Dart, the Giants turned to veteran Jameis Winston before handing the duties to recently acquired JJ McCarthy. The former first-round pick is coming off his first start, leading the Giants to a stellar overtime win against a talented Texans team. This came a week after he relieved Winston and nearly pulled off a historic comeback, throwing 243 yards and a touchdown in less than one quarter. In the small sample we have from the former Michigan Wolverine, he has given Giants fans plenty to be excited about. He showed tremendous ability to throw the ball downfield and get the ball to his top targets. In his start against the Texans Sunday, he connected with star wideout Malik Nabers on multiple big plays and gave rookie Malachi Fields the best game of his early career with 83 yards receiving. If McCarthy can maintain this level of play, the Giants can beat stronger teams down the line.

The G-Men's defense has numerous talents on the defensive side of the ball who will be making plays for years to come. A big reason for this defense is its pass-rush group. Rookie linebacker, Arvell Reese has played like a top-five linebacker so far this season, while 23-year-old pass rusher Abdul Carter has made a huge jump, seeming to get in the quarterback's face every play. While the Giants secondary is still a bit behind the line in terms of level of play, they have done their job. The biggest reason for this is the bounce-back season of young corner Deonte Banks. The former Maryland standout was another former first-round pick who looked to move on last season and has stepped up big. Sunday against the Texans, Banks covered starting receiver Nico Collins and limited him to just six yards. Not to mention, he picked off a game-winning touchdown against the Cardinals just a few weeks ago. The Giants' defense has shown what it can do, but not everything has been positive. With the final seconds of regulation slipping away, Houston seized its opportunity, delivering a late fourth-quarter equalizer that erased the deficit and sent the game into the unforgiving uncertainty of overtime. While they ultimately won, the defense had chances to make it easier. This upcoming bye week will hopefully help diminish any big mistakes from the Giants' defense and keep them consistent.

The biggest question around the Giants is whether they can consistently win big games against big teams. The Giants have shown ability to win games, but many are close calls. They must prove to fans and coaches they can control a team for four quarters, something they haven't done this season. Allowing Houston to tie late and kicker Dominic Zvada missing two crucial field-goal attempts won't fly against top teams. Mistakes like these are often the small things that decide a win or a loss. The good news is the Giants have plenty of time to fix the issues they are facing. They have a comfortable 4-2-1 record and have positioned themselves to make a playoff push, and a week off next week will give them even more time to catch up. The 2026 Giants have put themselves in a spot they haven't been in a while. However, it's still way too early to label them serious contenders. McCarthy's great debut, Nabers' big-play ability, and a young defense's big-time performances give the G-men reason to think they can beat anyone. Through the last seven weeks, they have looked completely different than they have in the last couple of seasons, even without their starting quarterback. If consistent quarterback play continues and the defense can make late-game stops, New York separates itself from most teams. For now, the Giants look like a big playoff threat. If they can stay healthy and keep the winning train going, the sky is the limit for this young team.
