Can the 2026 Yankees Come Back from a 2-0 Series Deficit Against the Rays?
The 2026 New York Yankees are one game away from their season being over. In the first two games of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Rays one-hit the Yankees in a 1-0 win in Game One, then four errors and a no-show offense, aside from Ben Rice, put the Bronx Bombers down 2-0 in a 5-2 win. Now it’s do-or-die time, and New York must hope their Game Three starter, Max Fried, can be the ace who slows Tampa Bay's momentum. Can the Yankees keep their season alive in front of their home fans in the Bronx, or will it be another year where New York comes up short once again?
Throughout this ALDS series, the Yankees offense has been at a standstill. Rice scored the team’s only two runs of the series in Monday night’s loss, and New York looks like a completely different team now than when they faced the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Round. Fried must pitch a great game on the mound, but it’s even more apparent that the Bronx Bombers’ offense must show up if they want to keep their season alive. It cannot be just Rice who’s supplying the team’s runs. Everyone needs to be involved and make the smart decisions to keep the Yankees in the fight.
The first two games of the ALDS are exactly what the Rays have been looking for. Game One starter Drew Rasmussen had one of the most impressive starts by a pitcher in the postseason in a while, going the distance of eight innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out 10. Freddy Peralta didn’t have nearly as great a start in Game Two; however, reliever Ian Seymour pitched three innings, striking out four batters, and was the perfect backup for Peralta, keeping Tampa Bay’s lead alive and well. Second baseman Richie Palacios two-run single in the bottom of the fifth pushed the game wide open for the Rays and put even more pressure on an even more lifeless Yankee offense.
Nick Martinez will get the start in Game Three for the Yankees. Back on September 22nd, the Yankees scored two runs off five hits from Martinez to get a big 2-0 win. New York has the potential to win this game; however, they must play the best baseball they’ve played throughout this 2026 season. The Bronx Bombers haven’t had Giancarlo Stanton & Aaron Judge in the lineup for most of the season; they must show why they were a 93-win team without those key guys in the lineup. If the Yankees cannot get a rally going and string a few hits together, they’re going to have a tough time winning Game Three at Yankees Stadium.
New York has to win the next three games to keep their 2026 season alive and well to advance to the American League Championship Series. That’s easier said than done. With an offense that showed the sky is the limit against Boston and then looks completely anemic against Tampa Bay, it’s more of an uphill battle to climb. While the Yankees could win Game Three, it’s less than likely they make it out of this ALDS. Tampa Bay should walk away with a win on the road with a 4-1 win on Wednesday night.
