Can the Big Ten Continue Their Streak of College Football Champions in 2026?
After what many call one of the best seasons in college football, people are wondering if the Big Ten can win another championship and surprise everyone again. To see how we got here, let’s look back at the 2023 Michigan Wolverines. They were not only champions but also at the center of controversy, with reports that Connor Stallions was caught disguising himself to spy on opponents. That story followed Michigan all year, and even though the team was great, they still had to hear rivals call them cheaters. One of those rivals, the Ohio State Buckeyes, ended up winning the title the next year, despite losing at home to a .500 Michigan team in their last regular-season game. Most recently, the Indiana Hoosiers made history by going 16-0, led by fearless coach Curt Cignetti and Heisman-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
Looking ahead to 2026, many teams across college football have a real chance at winning it all. Ohio State hopes to return to the top with a strong roster featuring quarterback Julian Sayin, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, and wide receiver Brandon Inniss. As the Big Ten has raised its standards, the talent has grown too. Indiana went from being overlooked to becoming a top powerhouse in just two years, and now recruits and transfer players are eager to join them in Bloomington. If a Big Ten team is going to win the championship this year, Ohio State and Indiana are the clear favorites. Oregon and USC are close behind, but they don’t have the same coaching strength as the last two champions. Indiana’s new additions, quarterback Josh Hoover and wide receiver Nick Marsh, make things even tougher for the competition.
Looking at the rest of college football, it’s clear the SEC is frustrated by the Big Ten’s comeback, and things are definitely changing. Indiana’s big win over Alabama might have ended the long-running SEC vs. Big Ten debate, but if not, three straight championships should do it. It’s hard to imagine a final four in January without at least one Big Ten team. The SEC still has plenty of talent, but the Big Ten keeps winning the most important games. Time will tell, but it already seems clear who the top teams are.
