Can the Canucks Secure a Win on Home Ice During First Game of Their 2025-2026 Season?

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks will kick off the 2025-2026 season at home on October 9th, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. PDT against the Calgary Flames. The Canucks have a lot to make up for during this season opener after a less-than-fortunate run last season. Following the team's qualification for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2023-2024 season, missing out on a playoff spot was disappointing for both the team and its fans. The Canucks will have to prove that they worked to improve during the offseason and come back strong for their first game back. Is a Canucks win a possibility for the season opener and their first game back on home ice?

The Canucks also opened their 2024-2025 season with a game against the Flames on October 9th, 2024, in Vancouver. The Cancucks lost this game in overtime 6-5. The Flames came to Vancouver once again on November 12th. This time, the Canucks came out victorious with a 3-1 win. Then, in December, the Canucks visited Calgary, where the Flames reclaimed victory with a 3-1 win over the Canucks. The two teams met up for one final game in the 2024-2025 season on March 12th, 2025, where the Canucks beat the Flames 4-3 in a shootout. Based on this alone, it may be a bit of a toss-up as to who will win the game this upcoming October.

The Canucks and the Flames have both been making moves throughout the summer thus far. They acquired Evander Kane from the Oilers, Ilya Safonov from the Blackhawks, as well as signing Derek Forbort and Tom Willander to one and three-year contracts, respectively. The Canucks also extended the contracts of Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, and Thatcher Demko. However, the Canucks have also let go of Dakota Joshua and Artur Silvos. The Canucks are also welcoming their new head coach, Adam Foote, behind the bench this season. Lots of new assets have been added to the team, and only time will tell how they will shape up this season.

While the Flames have also made some moves over the summer, I think the Canucks have signed more thoughtful contracts and added more players that could turn things around. Assuming the Canucks stay healthy— namely, captain Quinn Hughes— I think that Vancouver has a solid shot to take home a win on October 9th. Tune in for the game to see who will emerge victorious.
