Can the Cardinals Remain Undefeated When They Take on the 49ers?

NFL

The Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers have both started their seasons in the best way possible. They both have two wins and no losses. They will look to keep the momentum as they face each other this Sunday. The Cardinals and the 49ers have an extensive history.  According to The Football Database, the Cardinals have won 31 games against the 49ers, and the 49ers have won 36 games against the Cardinals all-time. The Cardinals will look to change history one game at a time, starting Sunday. The 49ers will look to continue their dominance over the Cardinals by getting a win on Sunday.

The Significance

Although we are still at the early stages of this football season, divisional games like these matter so much. If a team can’t win divisional games, it will likely miss the playoffs. With Brock Purdy being unlikely to start due to injury, the odds are in the Cardinals' favor. A win for either team would mean shifting them to lead the NFC West. This would mean a lot to the Cardinals, who have not won the division since 2015. With Brock Purdy likely to miss the game, this seems to be realistic for the Cardinals.

Last Matchup

The last time the Cardinals played the 49ers on January 5th, 2025,  Kyler Murray torched the 49ers' defense. He threw four touchdowns and had 25 completions on 35 attempts. The Cardinals were victorious in this matchup, winning 47-24.  Brock Purdy was not starting in this game either, with Joshua Dobbs filling in for him.  Dobbs threw 29 completions on 43 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Just from this stat line, it is clear that quarterbacks win games. If Murray can play the way he did last time, the Cardinals will have nothing to worry about.

The NFC West is a competitive division, and this game will have players looking to showcase their skills. The Cardinals have not won the division since 2015. They have the chance to capitalize on Brock Purdy’s absence by getting a win. This would give the Cardinals all the momentum. Momentum matters in football, and whoever wins this game will have all of it going forward.
