Can the Falcons Stand Out 22-Year-Old Edge Rusher Keep a Clear Head for the 2026 Season?
The Atlanta Falcons walked into the 2026 offseason with a lot of noise and drama. You’d think that an offseason quarterback battle would be the biggest headline of the offseason, right? Well, edge rusher James Pearce had other plans. Not even two days after appearing at the NFL honors, Pearce was taken into custody after the police were called for a domestic dispute back in February. Pearce’s NFL career was put in jeopardy by the potential felony charges he’d have to face. Fortunately for the former Tennessee Volunteer, one of Pearce’s charges was entered into a pretrial intervention program, allowing him to resolve the charges after completing a six-month program without any violations. Once the program is completed, the charges will be dismissed.
It goes without saying that Pearce was with the team for the start of their offseason training. Both general manager Ian Cunningham and head coach Kevin Stefanski refused to make any statements about the edge rusher or his status with the team until he returned to the facilities. On June 16th, Pearce returned to the team while still under the program provided by his attorneys. Stefanski commented on Pearce’s return, “I think throughout every situation, you take in all the information available to you.” The head coach also told the media that the Tennessee product will not be in any team drills during their practices this week.
Pearce will have a lot of work to do this offseason, not only with his pretrial program, but with patching up his relationship with his teammates. There is a firm belief in the Falcons' coaching staff that Pearce will be accepted back by his teammates. “Those types of things work themselves out organically, and I believe in the people we have in the locker room,” Stefanski said to the media on Tuesday. The Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist will partake in individual drills and weight room workouts, but will not be involved in any seven-on-seven or 11-on-11 drills with the team until further notice.
Pearce stated to the media during his return to practice, “I know and understand what’s expected of me. I just have to do my job.” Despite the legal trouble, Pearce was a force for the Falcons' defense during his rookie year in 2025. He led the team in sacks with 10-and-a-half and had 45 quarterback pressures, which set a Falcons rookie record. However, Pearce’s future remains uncertain, even with his return to his team. There still hasn’t been a word on whether or not a suspension or a fine will be put in place for the edge rusher. What is apparent is that Pearce needs to keep his head down, focus on his program, and make up for the work that he had missed due to his run-in with the police. He’ll have to keep a cool head if he wants to build on his productive rookie campaign. With help from his teammates and the coaching staff, there is hope that Pearce turns a new leaf and keeps his aggression strictly on getting to the opposing quarterback.
