Can the Yankees Overcome Their Current Collapse?
After the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline, New York Yankees fans were high on their team. With three new relief pitchers to back up a tired bullpen, new depth pieces, and the release of a struggling pitcher, everything was looking up for the team. The last three games in a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays showed the improvements the team put together, and it looked like the collapse was coming to an end. That was, until the Yankees set foot into LoanDepot Park to face the Miami Marlins: all signs of the collapse ending were fading away. Now, two games into the series, the Yankees find themselves in third place in the AL East, wondering if they can climb their way to the top once again.
Everything that could have gone wrong in Miami has gone wrong for the Yankees. Almost no one could have predicted that every new acquisition would make mistakes in the first game of the series, but their mistakes were the main reason for the loss. In game two, baserunning mistakes that most Major League players shouldn’t make, as well as the inability to score runs, cost the Yankees another game. These baserunning mistakes showed that the Yankees are filled with flaws, and these flaws run deep. Manager Aaron Boone showed his disdain for these mistakes, yet showing emotions doesn’t win ballgames. With the Yankees now in third place in the division after officially being passed by the Boston Red Sox, many are left questioning whether they can overcome this collapse and make the playoffs.
To move forward, the Yankees need to take better control of their opportunities. With Aaron Judge currently out of the lineup, batters like Cody Bellinger and Jasson Domínguez are getting better pitches to hit, and so far, haven’t been taking full advantage of the opportunity. Judge is set to return on Tuesday, which can hopefully restore balance within the lineup. In addition, the rotation needs to sharpen up, especially since general manager Brian Cashman chose to skip adding to the unit before the trade deadline. With Luis Gil set to return and lead the team in the last game against the Marlins, hopefully, both the pitching and the hitting can help the Yankees overcome their slump before heading to Texas.
