Canucks Announce Former Colorado Avalanche Star as New Head Coach

NHL

After a rough season for the Vancouver Canucks, it was revealed just a few weeks ago that Rick Tocchet would not be returning as head coach for the 2025-2026 season. The hunt for a new head coach saw several names thrown in the mix. However, today the Canucks officially announced that former Colorado Avalanche star Adam Foote would be the Canucks new head coach. Let’s take a look at Foote and some of his qualifications.

Adam Foote has been an assistant coach for the Vancouver Canucks since January 2023. Before coming to Vancouver, Foote served as a consultant for the Colorado Avalanche. Additionally, Foote spent time with the Kelowna Rockets as head coach. Foote is no stranger to coaching or the NHL, so his upgrade to Canucks head coach is unsurprising.

Foote spent 19 seasons in the NHL. He was drafted in 1989 by the Quebec Nordiques as the 22nd overall pick. Foote remained with Quebec through their relocation, which renamed the team the Colorado Avalanche. Foote was briefly traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for three seasons before eventually returning to Colorado in the 2007-2008 season. Foote remained in Colorado for the rest of his career before eventually retiring in 2011.

Foote is a two-time Stanley Cup winner, leading the Avalanche to win in 1996 and then again in 2001. One year after his second Stanley Cup win, Foote won a gold medal with Team Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Foote served as captain for the Avalanche for the last two seasons of his career, and the Avalanche retired his jersey number in 2013.

It’s well known by hockey fans across the world that the Vancouver Canucks have had some trouble with their administration, and have been unable to keep their last four head coaches for more than two seasons. After their 2023-2024 season that saw them advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 2024-2025 season ended in disappointment for the Canucks. Fans of the team are hoping that Foote can revive the team and bring out the best in the players. Only time will tell if Adam Foote will be an upgrade to the team following Rick Tocchet’s departure.
