Cardinals Drop Fifth Straight Game of the Season: What Does This Mean for Them Going Forward?
The Cardinals did not do enough to beat the Packers. This is not surprising to most Cardinals fans, as this season has been an epic failure. Kyler Murray has been out the last two weeks with a leg injury. Jacoby Brissett has been filling in. He was running from the Packers' defensive line the entire game as he was constantly getting sacked. Brissett basically had no time to get the ball off. The Cardinals lost 27-23 in a game that was a dog fight despite the Cardinals' offensive line issues.
The Cardinals Will Likely Not Make the Playoffs
The Cardinals do not have a lot of leverage to work with when it comes to the NFC West division. No team in that division has gotten off to as bad a start as the Cardinals have. The Rams are 5-2 and the 49ers and the Seahawks are both 4-2. The Cardinals can not afford to keep losing the way they have been if they want to make the playoffs. It is early in the season, but as things stand, the Cardinals are not on track to make the postseason. As of now, their best shot is to get in through the Wild Card spot, in which they would be competing with the two other teams that also would not win the NFC West. It’s not over til it’s over, but it will be soon if something does not change.
Jacoby Brissett Has Played Well Enough to Start
Jacoby Brissett has been filling in for Kyler Murray for the last two games. It is safe to say that he has not been playing like a backup. Brissett has been in the league since 2016, having his best season as the Colts quarterback in 2019 with 2,942 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions. Today, he had a solid stat line with 25 completions on 36 attempts for 279 yards and two touchdowns. It is not crazy to question if he should stay as the starter even when Kyler Murray is healthy again, as the 2018 Heisman Trophy winner has not been able to win. Brissett has been one of the only bright spots on a team that can not win.
The Cardinals can not win. That is the bottom line. Losing five straight does not happen to good teams. However, it is not how a team starts a season that makes them good. It is how they finish the season. If the Cardinals can go on a winning streak, then they can still make the playoffs, but that winning streak needs to happen now.
