Chargers Anticipated Production from Rookie Running Back
The Los Angeles Chargers, over the last two seasons, have had a revolving running back room. Austin Ekeler was the man in the room for several years, and then the Chargers signed Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. Edwards was the expected leadback but had a disappointing season. He would get released right before the start of the 2025 NFL Free Agency. Dobbins, on the other hand, was exceptional in his first year with the Bolts. He was loved by the fans and had a career year. Dobbins returning to the Chargers is still possible, especially since he was recently tagged with the UFA tender.
However, it is a little difficult since the Chargers added two backs to their roster. Najee Harris signed a one-year deal with the Chargers. He provides durability and tough running. During the NFL Draft, the Chargers used their first-round pick on Omarion Hampton. The running back from North Carolina was highly graded as a prospect. The majority had him ranked as the second-best running back in the class. Hampton and Harris are expected to be a dynamic duo for Jim Harbaugh next season.
In Hampton’s case, he brings speed and physicality. In college, Hampton was seen as a great runner when going north-south. He can be one of the best rookie running backs this season and a potential top back in the coming years within the league. Hampton has the potential to be a great all-around back. An underrated aspect of Hampton’s game is his ability to be useful in the passing game. He has great hands and could be a receiving option for Justin Herbert, especially on third downs. Also, Hampton’s frame, size, and footwork could make him a great pass-protection blocker.
The Chargers invested heavily in Hampton in the draft. With Harris being the lead back, Hampton will be eased into the league. The two will be a scary duo in the AFC West for at least one season. After the 2025 season, the Chargers will hand Hampton the keys to the running back room, where he should be able to blossom and take over the league by storm.
