Chargers Release Undrafted Rookie Running Back After Preseason

NFL

After an eventful preseason, the Los Angeles Chargers have decided to release rookie running back Raheim Sanders, who is often referred to as "Rocket" Sanders. For his first NFL preseason, he joined the squad as an undrafted free agent, hoping to gain a spot on the roster. Although he brought many thrills, it was a tough competition for a reserved spot in the crowded backfield. His dismissal serves as a further example of just how challenging it can be to secure an opening on the NFL roster, particularly for undrafted players.

During his college years, he played for the Arkansas Razorbacks and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Sanders showed many flashes of ability, which made him stand out as a versatile player. He carried the ball 27 times for 98 rushing yards. Additionally, he scored two rushing touchdowns, proving his capability when given the opportunity. With his impressive plays, Sanders also caught three passes for 28 yards. This showed the team and coaching staff his receiving skills. The team eventually decided to proceed with more seasoned choices, despite these strong statistics.

To fill the fifty-three-man roster, this comes down to meeting the roster requirements and filling the depth chart. Since the Chargers already have a collection of reliable running backs, there isn't much opportunity for a rookie to make a lasting impression. His work and progress during training camp were generally appreciated and noticed by the coaches. However, there were many tough decisions during final cuts that were frequently determined by numbers. For Raheim Sanders's sake, the decision has more to do with the business of assembling an NFL roster than it does with a lack of skill.

Given his preseason success, Sanders may now be the subject of close attention from several NFL teams. According to recent reports, the Cleveland Browns are searching for depth at running back, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding younger players like Quinshon Judkins. Due to their desire for greater versatility at the position, the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs have both been mentioned as potential backfield acquisitions. Given that they have the highest waiver priority and might need more running back assistance going into the season, the Tennessee Titans might also be a good fit.

Despite his departure from the Chargers, Raheim Sanders's preseason work may lead to opportunities elsewhere. In a short period of time, he accumulated two touchdowns and over 100 rushing yards, which is enough to draw the interest of other NFL teams. If possible injuries occur this season and create openings, he might be a great candidate for the practice squad or be given another chance at training camp. While supporters wait to see where the young running back's next chapter begins, Sanders will remain prepared for that special moment.
