Chargers Who Stood Out in the Loss to the 49ers
The 2025 NFL Los Angeles Chargers preseason is officially in the books, and it’s safe to say fans have a lot to think about. The Bolts ended 2–2, making the team feel like a true “dark horse” heading into this season. They finished their last preseason game with a 30–23 loss against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium. This matchup was more significant than any ordinary game; it showcased talent and potential. Many of the rookies took center stage with explosive plays, in high hopes of securing a spot. With the regular season opener looming in Brazil against Kansas City, these flashes of promise give Bolts fans and staff genuine reasons to be optimistic.
Rookie quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was on fire and a clear standout in comparison to other contenders on the squad. He had willpower when it mattered most. Uiagalelei threw 16 for 31 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns, including a 25-yard dime to Oronde Gadsden II on his first pass of the game. However, Uiagalelei had a slip-up with a pick-six, giving the 49ers the lead during the second half. Regardless, his poise and ability to take the lead showed potential that could cross over into Week One.
Rookie wide receiver Dalevon Campbell made a huge impact for the team. He caught four passes for 73 yards with speed. One of his best moments occurred on a tough toe-tap catch down the sideline while keeping both of his feet within bounds. Tight end Oronde Gadsden II found the end zone early and gained the respect of the coaching staff. Marlowe Wax, an undrafted linebacker, proved himself to the world with six tackles, two quarterback hits, a pass deflection, and a strip-sack. Wax provided skillful tactics during a thrilling match. Nikko Reed, who is also currently eligible to be drafted, grabbed a fumble recovery from a muffled punt while displaying his tight coverage. Additionally, wide receiver Luke Grimm caught a late touchdown while fumbling twice.
As the Chargers prepare for their season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, it is not their record that stands out. Instead, it is the infectious energy from the newcomers who may become key pieces to the roster. Players like Nikko Reed, Dalevon Campbell, Marlowe Wax, and DJ Uiagalelei demonstrated talent, resilience, which gives them the ability to have a profound impact. Even though the Bolts ended the preseason with a 2-2 record, their rookies' performances and moments of genius give supporters faith. As these rookies take the lead, the Chargers are ready to impress when the real season kicks off with an international match.
