Commanders Come Up Short Again in a Division Showdown

NFL

The Washington Commanders fell to 3–4 with a 44–22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium. What began with early rhythm from Jayden Daniels turned into one of Washington’s toughest outings of the year as the defense struggled to contain Dak Prescott. The Commanders kept pace through much of the first half before fading late. They have now dropped three of their last five and return home needing to regroup.

Daniels completed 12 of 22 passes for 156 yards with one touchdown and one interception, adding 35 rushing yards and a short score before exiting in the third quarter with a leg injury. Marcus Mariota replaced him and completed four of 10 passes for 63 yards, throwing a late interception as the offense sputtered down the stretch. Tight end Zach Ertz caught Daniels’ lone touchdown pass, while Chris Moore and Jaylin Lane each provided explosive plays downfield. Washington moved the ball early but couldn’t sustain drives after halftime.

Prescott carved through Washington’s defense, finishing 21 of 30 for 264 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with CeeDee Lamb for a 74-yard strike and hit tight end Jake Ferguson twice in the red zone. Running back Javonte Williams added 116 yards and a touchdown as Dallas rolled up 142 yards on the ground. DaRon Bland’s 68-yard pick-six in the third quarter extended the lead to 41–16 and put the game out of reach.

Luke McCaffrey gave the Commanders a spark on special teams, totaling 209 yards on eight kick returns, including a 41-yarder that set up one of Washington’s early scores. Tress Way averaged 57.2 yards per punt on five attempts, helping Washington control field position despite the lopsided score. Matt Gay converted both extra points in a quiet night for the kicking unit. Bobby Wagner led the defense with eight tackles, while Frankie Luvu recorded two tackles for loss.

The Commanders will turn their attention to next Monday night when they take on the Chiefs, uncertain of Daniels’ status heading into Week Eight. His availability could determine whether Washington can steady its offense after two straight road losses. The team’s effort has remained steady, yet its results continue to slip. With the season nearing its midpoint, the Commanders are still searching for the consistency that has eluded them all year.
