Could 2026 Be the Best Offseason the Dallas Cowboys Have Had in a Decade?

NFL

For the past decade or so, the Dallas Cowboys have faced a lot of scrutiny in the offseason due to their lack of approach to star talent. The same could be said for the NFL Draft, as while Dallas is known for their elite drafting in the first round, it still feels as if they could have done a bit better. Even when it comes to acquiring the right coaching staff, it seems like an issue at times for the Cowboys. However, the tide seems to be turning with how this year's offseason is going thus far, which begs the question: Is this year seeming to be the best offseason it has had in a decade?

Players Added

One of the most memorable offseasons for Cowboys fans since 2000 occurred in 2016, a year when unexpected talent emerged from several places. The rookie duo of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott took over the league, and with other players like Anthony Brown, Maleik Collins, and Joe Looney, Dallas was able to find starters in key positions for a long time. Now in 2026, the feeling around this offseason is that the Cowboys found starters and key players for the future. They signed players on defense to help what was an atrocious defense a year ago; for instance, Jalen Thompson, a safety from Arizona, became the highest free agent signing in the franchise's history. The draft also made a wish come true for everyone in Dallas as it ideally brought the defensive leader for the future in Caleb Downs, who has been a target for the Cowboys for a long time. Along with Downs, several other players were drafted who Dallas believes can be starters one day.

Defensive Hope

The primary goal this offseason was to acquire defensive players to address the glaring issue: the team's struggling defense. Central to this effort is defensive coordinator Christian Parker, the mastermind behind every decision, who Dallas hopes will turn around the defense's fortunes. While expectations are high for him, he has prepared himself for this moment and is the main reason for the renewed optimism surrounding a defense that struggled significantly last year. Obviously, it is still early to call, with players just being drafted only days ago and with Parker not having called a single snap in the NFL. The atmosphere in Dallas has changed, especially after the opportunity to select Downs in the draft. Many believe that he and other new players could make the 2026 offseason a memorable one in the franchise's history.
