Could the Vikings Take a Chance on the Cardinals Former Star Quarterback in 2026 Free Agency?

NFL

The Minnesota Vikings have been one of the more interesting teams to follow during the start of the 2026 offseason. The team has had to part ways with several veterans as they desperately try to get cap space. Another factor that has affected the offseason is the plans at quarterback. Minnesota has already begun to examine possible options, but as more teams make changes to their rosters, the number of options increases. One name that has recently become available is Kyler Murray, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals.

The former first overall pick has not quite lived up to his expectations. While he has made the Pro Bowl twice, the team has not won a playoff game during his time as a starter. In seven years, he has appeared in a total of 87 games, where he holds a record of 38-48-1. The 28-year-old has recorded a total of 20,460 passing yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions. In the rushing department, Murray has a total of 3,193 yards and 32 touchdowns. This past season, he appeared in five games, where he garnered 962 passing yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.

While it was a poor 2025 season for Murray, there are plenty of teams rumored to have interest in him. Due to the amount of money the Cardinals are paying him, it is believed he should be fairly cheap. It is a perfect chance for teams in need of a quarterback to take a chance on him. Having a one-year prove-it deal would also work well for Murray. If he performs well, then it would allow him to sign a larger deal next offseason, either with the same team or if he decides to look elsewhere.

This is where it works well for the Vikings. Minnesota is still trying to free up money, as it entered the offseason around $40 million over the cap. This signing would allow them to find a new option on a cheap contract. It would be hard to see him take a backup role, so if he came in, he would likely get the chance to start at the beginning of the season. However, he would have a short leash, as Minnesota still wants to see what they have with J.J. McCarthy.

When we look at some of the previous quarterbacks who worked well with Kevin O'Connell, such as Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins, it’s clear that Murray has more mobility and rushing upside. With this in mind, it is possible that he may not fit the exact style that the team prefers. However, his untapped potential makes him an interesting risk. His athleticism would bring a new element to the offense that has not been seen over the past few years. Additionally, when paired with talented receivers like Justin Jefferson, it could create a very explosive offense.

In the end, the Vikings’ interest in a newly available quarterback highlights the uncertainty surrounding the team as the 2026 offseason unfolds. With significant salary cap issues and several roster changes already taking place, Minnesota must carefully evaluate every opportunity to return to playoff contention. Bringing in a veteran on a short-term deal could provide stability while still allowing the team to evaluate its young quarterback. At the same time, the potential fit within the current offensive system raises valid questions about whether the move would truly benefit the team long term. As the offseason continues, the Vikings must decide if taking a chance on a low-cost, high-upside option is the direction they want to go as they shape the future of the franchise.
