Could Wolves Summer Planning Lead to Relegation?

After a season full of ups and downs, Wolverhampton Wanderers have managed to stay in the Premier League once again. With a new manager and fresh additions, the squad looked strong in the second half of the season. However, as summer begins, it seems as though Wolves could be heading down a dangerous path. Will poor decisions in the transfer market or a lack of investment put Wolves at risk of falling into a relegation battle?

The headline move of Wolves’ summer so far is the £62.5 million sale of Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Cunha was absolutely vital for Wolves last season, scoring 15 Premier League goals and providing six assists. Time and time again, his clinical finishing and ability to create chances bailed Wolves out of tough matches. Now, with his departure confirmed, Wolves face a massive void in attack. Without a clear replacement lined up, the team risks going into next season lacking firepower.

As Wolves deal with the loss of Matheus Cunha, another key player could soon be leaving, with Manchester City in advanced talks to sign Rayan Aït-Nouri. The 23-year-old left-back has reportedly given the green light for the move, and all parties expect the deal to be finalized soon. This past season, he recorded four goals and seven assists. Losing Aït-Nouri would not only weaken Wolves’ defense but also take away one of their most dynamic players. To make matters worse, Man City will most likely undervalue him at around £30 million, when he is easily worth £50-55 million.

Another key player Wolves could soon lose is their captain, Nelson Semedo. The 31-year-old right-back is nearing the end of his contract and has yet to accept the club's four-year renewal offer. Semedo has been a consistent performer for Wolves and took over the captaincy after Mario Lemina was stripped of the role in December 2024. Lemina has since left the club, and now Semedo’s own future at Wolves looks grim. Losing Semedo would be a massive blow to Wolves, both on and off the pitch. His leadership and defensive capabilities have been instrumental in the team's recent performances.

With key players already gone or on the verge of leaving, Wolves are entering a critical summer. The loss of Matheus Cunha leaves a glaring hole up front, while the likely departures of Rayan Aït-Nouri and Nelson Semedo could strip the team of its defensive stability and leadership. Without solid backups and a clear plan in the transfer market, Wolves risk going into next season with a much weaker squad. If Wolves don’t act quickly this summer, they could find themselves in a real fight to avoid relegation next season.
